Salem State Holiday Tournament (Men’s) / Salem State Wins – Endicott Falls / Stories Below

SALEM – Drew Healy (Lowell, Mass.) and Shaquan Murray (Boston, Mass.) each scored 24 points and Jacob Lindland (Hamilton, Mass.) added 20 points off the bench as Salem State cruised to a 113-88 victory over Clark on the first day of the Salem State Holiday Classic. Healy went a perfect 12-for-12 from the floor, becoming the first player to make 12 field goals in a game since Brian Clark went 12-for-13 from the field in a win over Bridgewater State in 2012. Healy is also the only player in the last 12 years to not miss while attempting more than 10-shots.

Healy dominated inside, going 9-for-9 from the field in the first half, scoring 18 points, as Salem State shot a blistering 61.8% (21-34) from the field. Buoyed by Healy’s inside presence, the Vikings held a 32-14 advantage in the paint as they raced out to a 28-14 advantage. Tyler Davern (Webster, Mass.), who had eight first half points, brought Clark to within 28-17 on his first three-pointer of the half. However, the Vikings managed to keep the lead above 10-points for the remainder of the first, building its largest advantage of 16 points after a Lindland trey with 3:26 remaining for a 41-25 lead. Lindland’s six first half points spearheaded the Vikings’ bench, which outscored the Cougars’ reserves 14-0 before halftime. Anthony Grzembski (Webster, Mass.) led Clark with 10 first half points as Clark shot 12-28 (42.9%) from the floor. Murray added nine first half points for Salem State.

Healy continued to score at will in the post as the Vikings built a 20-point advantage to start the second. Turnovers began to plague the Vikings, leading to seven easy points for Clark as the Cougars quietly crept back into the game.  A John Pisacreta (Andover, Mass.) three brought Clark to with 63-50 with 14:24 left in the second. Following a timeout, Salem State once again rode Healy’s inside stroke to go up 69-52 with 11:26 left. The Vikings continued to work the ball inside, outscoring Clark 60-36 for the game in the paint while Lindland kept Clark’s defense honest as he went 6-of-11 from behind the arc. The Vikings kept up their shooting touch in the second half going 23-37 (62.2%) to finish the game 44-for-71 (62.0%) . A three-pointer by Tyreik McCauley (Worcester, Mass), who finished with 17 points, put Salem State up 106-79 before a three and subsequent free throw by Tyler Leclerc gave the Vikings its largest lead at 110-81 – 29 points – with less than three minutes left.

Alex Santos (Lawrence, Mass.) and Sean Bryan (Lowell, Mass.) combined for 14 points and had eight assists apiece for Salem State, which improved to 8-3 on the year.

Luca McCormick (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) finished with 19 points while Grzembski added 18 points and five assists for the Cougars. Davern ended with 17 points for Clark (3-7), which shot 33-68 (48.5%) for the game.

SALEM — In its first game back from winter break, the Endicott men’s basketball team fell to Colby College, 94-84, in the Salem State Holiday Tournament at Twohig Gymnasium.

Keith Brown (Pelham, N.H.) paced the Gulls offensively with a team-high 22 points and eight rebounds. Joe Shehadi (Dorset, Vt.) added a career-high 17 points (5-7 FG, 3-4 3PT, 4-6 FT), while Joel Villa (Bronx, N.Y.) contributed 12 points, six assists, three rebounds, and three steals.

The Gulls led late in the contest, 73-72 with 7:31 remaining in the second half, but a 14-2 run over the next 4:25 of action by Colby spelled the difference for Endicott in the end.

Sam Jefferson (Newton, Mass.) fueled the spurt with five points, while Pat Dickert (Hatfield, Mass.) had four and Wallace Tucker (Atlanta, Ga.) and Sean Gilmore (San Francisco, Calif.) each chipped in with two points apiece.

Salem State Women’s Basketball Tournament

SALEM – Rebecca Olivieri (Milton, Mass.) scored 20 points, including 14 in the second half and Ruthie Zientek (Holmdel, N.J.) added a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Wheaton Lyons defeated Salem State 65-52 in the opening round of the Salem State Holiday Tournament on Friday afternoon. Wheaton (5-3) advances to face North Park in the championship game tomorrow at 3:00 PM while the Vikings (3-7) will take on Hamilton in the consolation game beginning at 1:00 PM.

Mikayla Pucci (Hopkinton, Mass.), who tallied 15 points overall, and Maria Matrango (West Yarmouth, Mass.) each had six first half points as Wheaton built a 28-15 halftime lead. The Lyons limited Salem State to just 1-of-12 shooting (8.3%) in the first quarter as the Lyons raced out to an 11-3 advantage. An 8-0 run to start the second increased the lead to 16 following a three-pointer by Zientek.

The Vikings continued to struggle in the second quarter as Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass.) – nine first half points – was the only Salem State player to find any rhythm offensively. Following a made basket and free throw by Fernandes and a layup by Norma Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) that cut the margin to 19-10, Wheaton quickly built the lead to 16 again after a basket by Matrango made the score 28-12. The Lyons shot 11-29 (37.9%) from the floor in the half and 4-of-9 (44.4%) from three point range. Waggett had eight rebounds and Fernandes six to lead Salem State, which went just 1-8 (12.5%) from three-point range.

Wheaton kept a comfortable lead after halftime, and after a layup by Pucci in the paint, the Lyons led 39-21 with 5:26 left in the third. However, back-to-back three’s by Fernandes sandwiched around two by Courtney Paschal (Waltham, Mass.) reduced an 18-point deficit to just nine with 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter a Salem State rallied with a 12-3 run. The Vikings continued to chip away at the lead in the fourth and after a Gianna Moschella (Peabody, Mass.) basket made the score 48-40, Paschal added another layup that brought the Vikings to within six with 5:27 remaining. With momentum going to the home team, Wheaton answered quickly as a basket by Pucci and two three-pointers from Zientek and Olivieri pushed the advantage back to 12 at 56-44 with 3:12 left after a make by Tyra Scott (Methuen, Mass.). The Lyons maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game before settling for a 65-52 win.
