Salem State Holiday Tournament / Men’s Action

SALEM —  Salem State’s Shaquan Murray (Boston, Mass.) scored a game-high 29 points as the Vikings came-from-behind to defeat Colby 93-83 in the Salem State Holiday Classic at Twohig Gymnasium on Saturday evening. Trailing by four at the half, Murray scored 25 second half points on 10-of-13 shooting to lead the comeback, earning team MVP honors. Drew Healy (Lowell, Mass.) added a double-double of 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Vikings. Dean Weiner (Tenafly, N.J.), who finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Mules also earned team MVP recognition.

Colby (7-3) jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead spearheaded by five quick points by Wallace Tucker (Atlanta, Ga.). Another three by Tucker and a layup by Sam Jefferson (Newton, Mass.) extended the lead to 15-4 at the 15:58 mark. Looking to spark his team, Jacob Lindland (Hamilton, Mass.) came off the bench and immediately ignited the slumping Vikings, scoring 14 fastbreak points by going 4-for-4 from behind the arc as Salem State (9-3) came roaring back to take its first lead at 22-20 with 10:14 remaining. The Vikings picked up on their play on the defensive end as well, as Colby managed just five points in two and a half minutes of play. Two Murray free throws gave Salem State a 30-26 advantage as the teams traded baskets over the next three minutes before back-to-back layups by Wallace and Pat Dickert (Hatfield, Mass.) in the final minutes gave the Mules a 42-38 lead at halftime. Tucker and Jefferson each had 10 points apiece for Colby, which shot 17-36 (47.2%) from the field.

Lindland exited the half with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting to lead the Vikings’ bench, which outscored the Mules 22-11.

Murray scored five straight points to open the second as Salem State pulled to within one at 44-43. The Mules responded with a 6-0 run to gain its largest lead of the half at 50-43 before Murray once again answered for Salem State, scoring the next seven points for the Vikings to cut the deficit to two. Salem State kept the game close as Murray gave the Vikings its first lead of the second half, 63-62 with 9:05 remaining. A Healy layup put Salem State up 71-69 and following a steal by Lindland, Rayshaw Matthews (Boston, Mass.) converted at the other end to increase the lead to four. Sean Bryan (Lowell, Mass.), who finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, had 12 second half points as the Vikings answered every Colby challenge. Two free throws by Bryan gave Salem State an 84-77 lead it would not relinquish. Lindland ended with 18 points for Salem State, which shot 34-73 (46.6%) for the game, including 19-34 (55.9%) in the second half.

The Mules were led by Jefferson’s 19 points while Tucker had 14 points and four assists for the Mules, who shot 34-74 (45.9%).

SALEM — The Endicott men’s basketball team defeated Clark University, 93-80, in its final game of the Salem State Holiday Tournament on Saturday evening at Twohig Gymnasium.

Keith Brown (Pelham, N.H.) dropped a game-high 34 points (13-27 FG, 6-13 3PT, 2-4 FT) to lead the Gulls, while fellow starters Joel Villa (Bronx, N.Y.) and Nick Thibeault (Gorham, Maine) contributed 17 and 14 points, respectively. Endicott also saw Vinny Clifford (Danvers, Mass.) post 12 points off the bench in the win.

The Gulls never trailed in the contest, as Endicott broke two early ties at the 19:19 (3-3) and 16:11 (11-11) marks of the first half, respectively, before pulling away from Clark the rest of the way. Endicott led for 38:49 out of possible 40:00 of play, or 97.0% of the game.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
Brown was named Endicott’s Team MVP for the Salem State Holiday Tournament.
Brown recorded his third 30-plus point game of the season (45, 38, 34).
Joe Shehadi (Dorset, Vt.) dished out a game-high and career-high seven assists.
Endicott led by as many as 18 with 12:22 remaining in the matchup.
The Gulls held a 38-34 advantage in points in the paint, and a 43-37 differential on the boards.

Salem State Women’s Basketball Tournament

SALEM —  Samantha Srinivasan (Mount Kisco, N.Y) and Lauren Getman (Manlius, N.Y.) each scored 12 points and Carly O’Hern (Jamesville, N.Y.) added 11 as Hamilton defeated Salem State 77-52 in the consolation game of the Salem State Holiday Tournament at Twohig Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. O’Hern, who also had four assists, went 4-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc to earn all-tournament honors. Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass.), who had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Vikings also earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Hamilton (9-1) shot 8-11 (72.7%) from the field in the first quarter as the Continentals built a 22-9 advantage. Tied 4-4, Hamilton went on a 12-2 spurt highlighted by back-to-back three’s from Srinivasan and Getman. Leading 19-9, the Continentals scored five straight points in the final three and a half seconds of the first quarter to take a commanding 22-9 lead into the second. A layup and free throw by O’Hern preceded a steal by Mackenzie Aldridge (Mystic, Conn.), who converted at the buzzer, for a 13-point Continentals’ lead. Hamilton extended the margin to as many as 19 in the second quarter before settling for a 36-21 halftime lead. Salem State (3-8) was led by Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass.), who paced the Vikings with seven first half points.

The Continentals built the lead to 46-23, scoring 10 straight points after two free throws by Gianna Moschella (Peabody, Mass.). O’Hern, who had eight points in the third quarter, knocked in her second three-pointer of the game, to put Hamilton up 49-23 with 6:27 remaining in the third quarter. An Aldridge layup gave Hamilton its largest lead at 58-30 before Brianna Rodriguez (Salem, Mass.) connected on a three to make the score 58-33 heading into the fourth.

Both teams went to their bench in the fourth as the Continentals maintained a 25-point lead. Srinivasan led Hamilton with six rebounds while Kendall Rollis (Matteson, III.) contributed with six assists for the Continentals, who shot 29-59 (49.2%) for the game. Norma Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) – 11 points and Moschella – 10 points both landed in double digits while Rodriguez added five steals for Salem State, which shot 17-53 (32.1%) for the game.
