Saugus Police Investigating Serious Head-on Motor Vehicle Crash

SAUGUS — Chief Domenic DiMella reports that the Saugus Police Department is investigating a serious early-morning motor vehicle crash.

At 12:10 a.m. Saturday, Saugus Police and Fire responded to Hamilton Street near the intersection with Seville Street. Upon arrival, they found that a Toyota RAV4 and a Ford Mustang had crashed head-on, with airbag deployment.

A woman driving the Toyota was seriously injured, and two passengers in the Ford were critically injured, with one passenger being ejected from the vehicle. The other passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle. All three people were taken to area hospitals.

The driver of the Ford had fled the area when first responders arrived.

An investigation by the Saugus Police Department determined that the driver of the Ford is allegedly a 19-year-old man from Saugus. The investigation indicates that he lost control of his vehicle and traveled into the oncoming lane. The Ford then struck the Toyota before coming to a rest on a nearby lawn on Hamilton Street.

The driver of the Ford, who is known to police, will be summonsed to court on charges of Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Injuries. Additional charges may come as the investigation unfolds.
