Men’s College Hockey

WESTFIELD, Mass.  – Westfield State freshman Chris Melendez (Miami, Fla.) scored his first collegiate goal, which also proved to be the eventual game-winner in the Owls’ 5-2 win over Salem State University on Saturday night.

Melendez’s goal, although coming at 15:26 of the second period, was the game-winner in the contest thanks to a late powerplay goal from Salem State in the third period.

With the win, the Owls (11-5-4) move to 9-3-2 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC), inching closer to the top spot in the league. The Vikings (4-12-4) fall to 4-7-2 in the conference.


PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — Tied 1-1 late in the third period, Endicott senior forward Jason Kalinowski (Stamford, Conn.) buried a loose puck in front of the net with 24.2-seconds to play to lift the Gulls over Salve Regina, 2-1, on Saturday night at the Portsmouth Abbey Rink.

Meanwhile, in the second period, Thomas Albert (Reading, Mass.) potted his fourth goal of the season at the 9:48 mark to give Endicott an initial 1-0 lead.

  • Tonight’s victory clinched Endicott’s first-ever regular season series sweep against Salve Regina.
  • Endicott extended its winning streak to nine straight games with tonight’s triumph.
  • The Gulls are 8-1-0 on the road this season.

Endicott (16-5-0, 12-2-0 CCC) travels to Wentworth on Friday, February 14 at 7 PM.


Men’s College Basketball

SALEM Hakeem Animashaun (Dedham, Mass.) erupted for 27 points, 16 rebounds, and five blocks to help the Salem State Vikings defeat the MCLA Trailblazers 88-67 at Twohig Gymnasium on Saturday in MASCAC action. Animashuan entered the day second in the country with 16 double-doubles and ranked fifth nationally in rebounding (12.6). The Vikings go to 4-18 and 3-6 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC). The Trailblazers fall to 14-7 on the season and 7-2 in the MASCAC.


BEVERLY – The Endicott men’s basketball team defeated Roger Williams, 76-66, on Saturday afternoon at MacDonald Gymnasium.

Up one (29-28) with a little over two minutes remaining in the first half, the Gulls scored eight straight points to give themselves a 37-28 lead at the halftime break.

Endicott continued that momentum out of the break opening up a 21 point lead (63-42) via a 26-14 run over the first eleven minutes of the second half.

The Hawks fought back, with a 16-6 run to bring the Gulls lead to single digits (69-61). But Endicott proved to be too much as they held Roger Williams to just five points over the final 4:33 to earn the victory.

Jalen Echevarria (Lynn, Mass.) paced the Gulls in scoring with 20 points, while Matt McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) closely followed with 19 points.

Meanwhile, Keith Brown (Pelham, N.H.) notched a 14 point 10 rebound double-double.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Today was Brown’s fourth double-double of the season.
  • Echevarria has scored in double figures in eight straight games.
  • Endicott leads the all-time series over Roger Williams, 31-10.
  • Brown led the Gulls on the run in the second half with nine points, Echevarria also contributed with eight points.
  • With today’s victory, Endicott completed the season sweep over Roger Williams.

Women’s College Basketball

BEVERLY  The Endicott women’s basketball team fell to Roger Williams, 60-57, in overtime on Saturday afternoon at MacDonald Gymnasium.

After what was a back and forth first three-quarters of the game, Endicott found themselves down five, (43-39) with over eight minutes remaining. The Gulls stormed back with a 9-2 run over four minutes to earn a 48-45 lead, and set-up a wild finish.

Roger Williams re-took the lead (49-48) with just 1:11 remaining through a Sam Mancinelli (Peabody, Mass.) jump shot. Endicott (12-10, 9-3 CCC) will host Salve Regina at MacDonald Gymnasium on Tuesday,


SALEM – Hannah Cravedi (Templeton, Mass.) scored the go-ahead layup with less than five seconds remaining to propel the Salem State Vikings to an exciting 59-55 victory over the MCLA Trailblazers on Saturday afternoon at Twohig Gymnasium in the Vikings’ annual “Think Pink” game. Cravedi finished with eight points, five rebounds, and two assists. Cravedi scored the last five points for the Vikings to seal the win, including a three-point play with 3.3 seconds left in regulation. Salem State moves to 6-15 on the season and 3-6 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC). MCLA drops to 2-18 on the year and 0-9 in the MASCAC.

Nicole Freddo (Marblehead, Mass.) led all scorers with 11 points (FG 5-7) for Salem State.
