BEVERLY – The first-seeded Endicott men’s volleyball team captured its fourth straight New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Tournament championship with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-19) win against third-seeded Daniel Webster  on Saturday afternoon at MacDonald Gymnasium.

John Osborne (Freehold, N.J.) was named the NECC Tournament Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season, as the senior outside registered a double-double on 17 kills (.318) and a match-high 14 digs. Osborne also added three assists and a perfect serve-receive percentage (19 total attempts) to his stat line in the victory.

Jeremy Doski (Sandy Hook, Conn.) notched a match-high 20 kills (.400) to aid the Gulls to their fourth straight title, while Troy Riorden (Fairport, N.Y.) put together his second double-double of the season with 15 kills and 10 digs.

Cameron Little (San Diego, Calif.) ran the offense with 57 assists on 121 attempts (.471), alongside six digs, while Ryan Healy (Fair Lawn, N.J.) helped guide the back row with 10 digs and a .957 serve-receive percentage (22 attempts). Chandler Tayek (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) also contributed seven digs, and Daniel Toth (Glenwood, N.J.) and Alex Wasik (Milford, Mass.) registered kill totals of six and five, respectively, to round out the list of highlights for the Gulls.

Daniel Webster was led by Tommy Reyes (Providence, R.I.) in the loss as the junior outside compiled a team-high 17 kills (.433), in addition to five digs, two blocks, and a service ace. Ryan Howdeshell (Fairbanks, Alaska) added nine kills and nine digs, while Saunoa Afoa (Las Vegas, Nev.) had eight kills, ten digs, three blocks, and three assists.

Darrien Mason (Farmington, Conn.) also tallied seven kills and six blocks, while Nate Makaiwi (Las Vegas, Nev.) concluded the individual achievements for the Eagles with 39 assists (.406), 13 digs, and two blocks.

Tied 20-20 in set one, Daniel Webster used a late 5-3 run – which included a pair of kills from Afoa – to take a 1-0 lead in the match (25-23). Endicott responded in set two as the Gulls limited the Eagles to a match-low .088 hitting percentage behind a set-high 15 digs to claim an eventual 25-18 second-set victory, and even the match at 1-1.

Set three was the difference for the Gulls as the defending champs withstood 12 tied scores and four lead changes for a 25-23 win, and a 2-1 advantage in the match. The third set was the most contested set out of the entire match as Endicott never led by more than four points. The Gulls also received three errors down the stretch by the Eagles and a kill from Doski with the scored tied at 21-21 to help lock up the set-three victory.

In set four, Endicott raced out to an 18-9 lead – the highest point differential in any set – before defeating Daniel Webster 25-19 to clinch its fourth straight NECC title.

SALEM STATE WOMEN’S LACROSSE

SALEM. —  Kalia Chase (Northbridge, MA) tallied five goals as the Lancers of Worcester State cruised past the Vikings of Salem State 20-10 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. With the victory, the Lancers improve to 4-6 and 1-1 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference. Salem State slides to 3-5 on the season and 0-2 in the MASCAC.   

Worcester State set the pace for the game early as they tallied six unanswered goals in the first 15 minutes of the contest. During that stretch, Mackenzie Callini (W. Springfield, MA) netted two goals for the Lancers including the game’s first goal 50 seconds into the match.  Worcester State outshot the Vikings on net 17-8 in the first half while also dominating the game in the neutral zone, grabbing 21 groundballs compared to Salem State’s 12. Paige Giuliano (Braintree, MA) ended the Worcester State run as she cut the deficit to 6-1 with a goal that beat Lancers’ goalie Krissy Pessa (Walpole, MA) high and left. Worcester State answered the Giuliano goal with three goals of their own to gain a 9-1 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the half. However, the Vikings got the Lancers lead down to 9-3 before the second half with help from Courtney Smith (Peabody, MA) and Katie Hart (Beverly, MA).

Salem State came out firing at Pessa in the second half as they scored two goals in 30 seconds to come within four of Worcester State. Kalia Chase (Northbridge, MA) tallied her fourth goal of the game at the 27:07 mark to put the Lancers ahead 10-5. Chelsea Smith (Tewksbury, MA) retaliated with a coast-to-coast goal, but that would be quickly erased as the Lancers tagged Salem State goaltender Jenn Toussaint (Reading, MA) for two more goals to take a 12-6 advantage. Chase carried the offensive load for the Lancers as she scored her fifth goal of the contest with a free position opportunity that made the score 13-6. Worcester State’s defense helped them gain a 10-goal lead at the 18:55 mark when Jackie Connors (Ashland, MA) intercepted the ball and went the length of the field for the score. Down 16-6 the Vikings answered when Bridget Lawless (Swampscott, MA) beat Pessa low to make it 16-7. A three- goal run from the Vikings cut the Lancers lead to 16-9, Worcester State quickly answered with three goals of their own to regain a 10-point lead at 19-9. During that run, Callini, Alaina Martin (E. Longmeadow, MA), and Alexis Vechhiarelli (Agawam, MA) each scored once.

Pessa stopped eight shots in the victory while Toussaint made 13 saves for the Vikings’. Callini added three goals for the Lancers while Martin finished with five points on three assists and two goals. Leading the Vikings was Courtney Smith, Hart and Erin Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) who all scored twice in the loss. 

Salem State will host the Pride of Regis College on April 12th at 4:00 p.m. while the Lancers take on conference opponent Curry College at 7:00 p.m. on April 14th.

Men’s Lacrosse

SALEM — Salem State’s Ben Melaugh (Billerica, MA) scored five goals and added an assist, but Tim Reilly (Hanover, MA) tallied five points with four goals and one assist for Eastern Connecticut as the Warriors trumped the Vikings 14-9 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Warriors improve to 6-4 on the year and 2-0 in the Little East Conference. Salem State falls to 5-6 and 0-2 in the LEC

The Vikings got on the scoreboard first as Alex Pearsons (Burlington, MA) and Melaugh connected in the first two minutes of play. Eastern Connecticut answered immediately with a goal from Michael Dellanno (Wakefield, MA) and Dan Vasquez (Newington, CT) to take a 2-1 lead. Melaugh and Pearsons connected again to knot the game at 2-2, but that would be quickly erased as Liam Murphy (Dover, NH) and Vasquez regained a 4-2 edge for East Connecticut. In the second period, the Warriors took a 5-2 advantage in the opening minutes when Vasquez completed the hat-trick. For the third time, in just one half, Pearsons found Melaugh again at the perimeter for an easy goal to cut the deficit to 5-3. However, Eastern Connecticut tallied three goals in a row to take an 8-3 edge including two goals from Tim Reilly (Hanover, MA) who was assisted by Shawn Tierney (Norwell, MA) on both scores. Nick Fernandes (Fairfield, CT) scored the eighth goal for the Warriors with an assist from Giuseppe Parisi (Danbury, CT). Just before the end of the half, Bobby Bourgeois (Billerica, MA) found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 8-4.

Melaugh and Pearsons continued their dominance in the offensive end in the second half as Melaugh brought the score to 8-5 with a goal. Fernandes tallied his second goal of the game to regain a four-goal lead at 9-5, but that would be canceled out by another Pearsons’ goal to bring the game to 9-6. Right before the end of the third, David Borovsky (Burlington, CT) added another score to put Eastern Connecticut ahead 10-6. In the opening moments of the final period, Pearsons notched his second goal of the game to bring the Vikings to within three before Thomas Lyons (Burlington, MA) netted his first goal of the game for Salem State that cut the deficit to 10-8. The Vikings, however, lost momentum

in the fourth as they allowed four consecutive goals from the Warriors to fall behind 14-8. During that stretch, Reilly scored twice while Murphy and Borovsky added one apiece. The Vikings got one back as Melaugh scored his fifth goal of the contest to bring the final score to 14-9.

Blake Smaldone (Hamilton, MA) finished with 14 saves while Kevin Lally (Beverly, MA) stopped 11 shots for Salem State. Pearsons led all players with an impressive six points including four assists and two goals. For the Warriors, Vasquez ended the day with five points on three goals and two assists while Reilly had four goals and an assist.

Salem State continues conference play when they host the Panthers of Plymouth State University on April 16th at 5:00 p.m. The Warriors will also continue LEC play when they take on the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth on April 16th at 1:00 p.m.

Endicott Women’s Lacrosse Wins

BEVERLY, Mass. – Emily Whitney‘s (Rye, N.H.) goal with six seconds remaining in the first overtime sent the Endicott women’s lacrosse team flying onto the field to a celebrate a 10-9 victory over visiting Western New England University Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Hempstead Stadium.

The Gulls opened the game with a strike from freshman midfielder Ali Campbell (Lakeville, Mass.) with 26:24 on the clock and built a 4-1 advantage with 16:22 to play in the first half.

The Golden Bears knotted the score at four apiece on the second of senior attack Brooke Kumnick’s (Granby, Conn.) game-high four goals at the 1:45 mark before Whitney gave the Gulls a 5-4 edge heading into the break.

The second half saw the Gulls create a two-goal cushions three times, as they led 6-4, 8-6, and 9-7, but WNEU’s senior attack Taylor Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored her CCC-leading 51st goal of the season to tie it all up at nine-all with 4:09 remaining in regulation.

Sophomore goalie Molly Lane (Durham, Maine) earned her first career win for Endicott as she came in to replace junior net-minder Maura Grady (Marblehead, Mass.). Lane recorded 22:53 minutes of action in goal and made three saves, including a key stop on a free-position shot with 23 seconds left in overtime to set up Whitney’s game-winner.

Golden Bears’ sophomore goalie Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) fell to 8-4 on the season as she made 19 saves in the defeat.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Gulls won their second consecutive game by the score of 10-9 as Whitney had the game-winning goal in both contests.
  • Whitney tied team-high on the day with three goals and dished out one assist for her fifth hat trick of the season.
  • Freshman attack Jackie Healy (Northborough, Mass.) netted a career-high three goals for her first career hat trick.
  • Campbell registered her second consecutive five-point total as she scored two goals and tallied a game-high three assists. (Five points is a career-high.)
  • Senior attack Isabelle Sipperly (Greenwich, N.Y.) notched her first goal of the season.
  • Campbell has three assists in three games this season.
  • Endicott won a season-high 16 draw controls as sophomore midfielder Olivia Larson (Cheshire, Conn.) tallied a game-high/career-high nine draw controls.
  • The Gulls took a season-high 33 shots.
  • Endicott won its first home game of the season.

FOR THE FOES

  • Kumnick and Scialdone each recorded a game-high four goals.
  • Scialdone leads the CCC with 51 goals on the season.
  • Kumnick totaled a game-high six points as she also chipped in a team-high two assists alongside sophomore attack Julia Winer’s (Longmeadow, Mass.) pair of helpers.
  • 19 saves for McFadden was her second-highest total this season. (20 against Bridgewater St. on March 31, 2016).
  • Senior midfielder Megan Clune (Scotia, N.Y.) collected a game-high four ground balls and caused a game-high three turnovers.

NOTES

  • The Gulls are 13-6 all-time and 7-2 at home vs. WNEU dating back prior to the 2001 season.
  • WNEU had won the past two meetings, including a 15-12 win in Springfield, Mass. on April 18, 2015 last season before the Gulls snapped that streak today.

Endicott Men’s Lacrosse Loses

BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott men’s lacrosse dropped their first CCC game of the season in a tightly-contested 12-10 loss to No. 17 Western New England on Saturday afternoon at Hempstead Stadium. Tied 9-9 midway through the fourth quarter, the Golden Bears tallied the next three goals of the game including two by senior attacker Jon Bota (Mahopac, N.Y.) to secure the road win for Western New England.

Endicott (4-7, 3-1 CCC) got a six-goal effort from junior attacker and leading scorer Will Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) who reached the 50-goal plateau.

Western New England (8-3, 4-0 CCC) showcased a more balanced offensive attack with four different multi-goal scorers including three apiece for Bota, junior attacker Justin Bard (Westfield, Mass.), and junior attacker Keegan Dudeck (Longmeadow, Mass.). Freshman attacker Jared Ward (Littleton, Mass.) netted back-to-back goals as part of a third quarter performance that saw the Golden Bears shutout the Gulls 3-0 in the period.

In a back-and-forth first half that saw four ties and two lead changes, Endicott was able to break away from a 6-6 tie in the second quarter to own a 8-6 lead at the half. Freshman attacker Kenneth Speak (Melbourne, Australia) scored an unassisted goal at the 5:40 mark of the second quarter and Jennings buried a shot off a feed from senior midfielder Peter Field Jr. (Hampstead, N.H.) with just under two minutes remaining to give Endicott the halftime advantage.

Western New England regained momentum in the second half with a 3-0 third quarter thanks to goals by Dudeck, from Bard, and back-to-back tallies from Ward, first an unassisted goal at 6:34 and then a man-up conversion with 3:12 remaining off a pass from  Bard, his third assist of the game.

Jennings from freshman attacker Matthew Faucher (Western Springs, Ill.), man up, knotted the score at 9-9 with 9:24 remaining in regulation. Western New England, however, executive a decisive three-goal run late in the fourth quarter with two goals by Bota and one by Dudeck to capture the win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott is now 8-10 all-time against Western New England. The Golden Bears broke a two-game losing skid to the Gulls with today’s win.  
  • Endicott’s last loss to a nationally-ranked Western New England team was in 2012, a 7-3 loss at home when the Golden Bears were ranked 18th in NCAA Division III.
  • Jennings is the first Endicott men’s lacrosse player since Harrison Cotter ’15 to eclipse 50 goals in a season. Cotter did it in 2014. Before that, former USILA All-American Nick Cosco ’09 scored 58 in 2008.
  • Senior goalie Cameron Bell (Falmouth, Maine) made 10 saves in the loss. He remains one win shy of tying head coach Eric Hagarty ’10 on the program’s all-time wins list in the cage.
  • Junior face-off specialist Tommy Hughes (Coram, N.Y.) won 13 and lost 12 match ups at the X against Golden Bears senior David Cedrone (Yantic, Conn.).
  • Sophomore defenseman Michael Ryan (Falmouth, Maine) led the team with two caused turnovers.
  • As a team, Endicott held a 33-28 ground ball advantage.

FOR THE FOES

  • Senior attacker Taylor Dubose (Altamont, N.Y.) was one of three Golden Bears players to record three assists. Bard and Dudeck were the other two.
  • Western New England 2-for-5 with the man-advantage. They scored man-up on a first quarter goal by Frank Medlicott (Stanwood, Wash.) and in the third by Ward.
  • The Golden Bears outshot the Gulls 37-32.
  • Golden Bears goalie sophomore Steven Kerr (Hopkinton, Mass.) made 14 saves in the win.
  • Steven Patrie (Lewiston, Maine) and Cameron Purcell (Sacramento, Calif.) each had two caused turnovers.
