Men’s College Basketball
Salem State 81, Fitchburg 71 – Jaden Castillo (Lawrence) and Michael Makiej (Andover) combined for 44 points to give Salem State an 87-71 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over Fitchburg State on Saturday afternoon in Twohig Gymnasium. The Vikings are now 9-7 overall and 3-2 in conference action, while leaving the Falcons still in search of their first conference victory.
Endicott 67, Wentworth 66 – Ty Vitko (Dover, N.H.) led a quartet of Gulls in double figures with 14 points and seven boards including the game-winning free throws with seven seconds left. The duo of Jeff Hill (Lynn) and Cam Homsey (Windham, N.H.) each notched 11 points in the victory. Jalen Echevarria (Lynn, Mass.) supplied 10 points in 37 minutes of action. Endicott (11-6, 6-3 CCC) welcomes the University of New England (UNE) on Tuesday, January 23 at 7:30 PM.
Women’s College Basketball
Salem State 87, Fitchburg 72 – Senior Kylie Gates (Pembroke) notched her second career triple-double to help lead Salem State. The Vikings boost their record to 8-9, 2-3 while the Falcons drop to 4-13, 1-3. Gates was instrumental in the team’s victory with 11 rebounds, 13 assists, 15 points and eight steals.
Endicott 87, Wentworth 47 – Sarah Dempsey (Windham, N.H.) led four Gulls in double figures with 15 points (6-10 FG, 3-3 FT) alongside four rebounds and three dimes. Katelyn Konareski (Milford, Conn.) produced 12 points on a perfect 5-5 shooting from the floor and 2-2 from bonus distance along with a personal-best six steals off the bench. Emma Shinney (Wakefield) chipped in with 12 points, five dimes, and three steals, while Libby Fleming (Bangor, Maine) finished with 10 points and seven boards in 26 minutes of action. The Blue and Green’s defense later fueled a 10-4 scoring run to gain a 28-13 with 6:12 to play, as Dempsey, Konareski, Fleming, Cora Nadeau (Newport, Vt.), and Taylor Bogdanski (Saugus, Mass.) each netted a bucket during the spurt.
Endicott (10-6, 6-3 CCC) welcomes the University of New England (UNE) on Tuesday, January 23 at 5:30 PM.
Men’s College Hockey
Endicott 3, Nichols 2 – Andrew Kurapov (Corvallis, Ore.) created the scoring chance for Sterrett with an impressive display of forechecking, eventually winning the puck at the blue line before swiftly playing it back to Sterrett in the neutral zone. After receiving Kurapov’s tape-to-tape feed, Sterrett burst into the offensive zone and sniped a wrist shot, glove side past Nichols’ tender for the game-winner (fifth career). Endicott (10-4-4, 7-2-2 CCC) hosts Suffolk on Friday, January 26 at 7 PM.
Women’s College Hockey
Elmira 6, Salem State 0 – Salem State senior goalie Kaia Hollingsworth (Methuen, Mass.) recorded a school-record 75 saves in the contest.
Endicott 5, Salve Regina 1 – Teaghan Hall (West Springfield, Lily Anderson (St. Paul, Minn.), Emmerson Hayes (Los Angeles, Calif.), Rivers Morris (Braintree), and Quin Healy (Melrose) all scored in the victory. No. 14 Endicott (12-4-2, 9-2-0 CCC) visits Curry on Friday, January 26 at 7 PM.
