Salem State Winters Sports – Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams Post Road Wins Tonight

SALEM – Winter Sports Update Men’s and Women’s basketball and hockey teams in action this week.

Men’s Basketball

Tuesday Night – Salem State 92 UMass 70

BOSTON, Mass. – Led by Ryan Coulter’s team-high 16 points, and a 20-3 run to open up the second half, the Vikings of Salem State University defeated men’s basketball in their home opener by the final of 92-70 Tuesday evening in the Clark Athletic Center Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Coulter led the contest with an impressive 4-for-7 showing from behind the arc, and finished 6-for-11 on the night to lead his team to their first win of 2015-16.  Zach Hurynowicz dropped in 15 points to finish second on the team, as he went 5-for-9, 3-for-5 from 3-point range.

Women’s Basketball

Tuesday Night – Salem State 83 Anna Maria 80

Kaitlyn Bryan (Lowell, Mass.) paced the Vikings with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass.) with 15 points and eight rebounds. Sarah Callahan dished out six assists.

Saturday at Lasell 1 p.m.

Men’s Ice Hockey (2-1)

Host Fitchburg State Thursday 7 p.m.

Women’s Ice Hockey (3-1)

Travel to SUNY Canton, NY for two game weekend series Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.)

 

 

 

 

Women’s Ice Hockey Notes – Last weekend

Salem State earned a weekend sweep of the Daniel Webster Eagles with a 7-4 victory Saturday evening at Rockett Arena. The win improves the Vikings to 3-2 on the season and evens their Colonial Hockey League record at 2-2. Daniel Webster slips to 0-5, and 0-4 in conference play.

Stephanie Evans (Washington, IA) put the Eagles up 1-0 early on a power play goal, but Salem State’sSara Zatorski (Parker, CO) and Alexandra Breen (Salem, NH) put notched back-to-back goals to put Salem State up 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

In the second Evan’s recorded her second score to tie the game at 2-2 before Kathryn Noreen (Juneau, AK) gave the Eagles the lead at 3-2 off a feed from Jennifer Johnson (Gillette, WY). However, Kristen McKenzie (Arlington, MA) and Breen retaliated for the Vikings to put the home team ahead 4-3 after two.

Salem State opened up the lead with two quick goals from Jacqueline Sindoris (Charlestown, MA) and McKenzie to push the advantage to 6-3. Johnson got one back for Daniel Webster on the power play, but Caroline McKinnon (Winthrop, MA) closed the scoring with her first goal of the year to make the final 7-4.

Vikings’ goaltender Katherine Crane (Arlington, MA) stopped nine shots for Salem State in her first start to earn the win. Ariana Kresic (Edmonton, AL) made 27 saves for the Eagles in the loss.

Salem State travels to SUNY Canton in New York for a 7:00 PM puck drop next Friday.  Daniel Webster will also play away next Friday at Morrisville State at 7:00 PM.
