SALEM – Salem State swept MCLA in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Central Campus Baseball Field. Sean Buckland(Lynn, MA / St. Mary’s) pitched a complete game two-hit shutout as he compiled 12 strikeouts in a 5-0 win in game one while Mike Davis (Peabody, MA) secured a 6-2 victory with a sixth inning home run  to left field in game two. The Vikings move their record to 7-9-1 and 2-0 in the MASCAC. The Trailblazers fall to 3-11 on the season and 0-2 in the MASCAC.

Game One
Teghan Malionek (Salem, MA) put the Vikings on the scoreboard first in the second inning when he drove in Jose Cedano (Lawrence, MA) with a triple hit between the centerfield and left field gap to give Salem State an early 1-0 lead. Buckland worked quickly and was efficient despite running into some trouble in the fourth. Bill Pulasky (Williamstown, MA) doubled with the first at bat and then advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt from Liam Nolan (Pittsfield, MA). With one out and a man on third, Buckland came through for the Vikings as he struck out the next two batters to keep the Trailblazers off the scoreboard. Those two strikeouts were the beginning of Buckland’s hot streak as he retired seven Trailblazers in a row including six strikeouts.

The Salem State bats reciprocated Buckland’s performance and began to pile on the runs in the fifth inning as they batted around the order. With the first pitch of the inning, Andrew Deloury (Peabody, MA) took Nolan deep to left field for a 2-0 lead. In the next at bat, Tyler Galimi (Northbridge, MA) got hit by a pitch and then went from first to third on a sacrifice bunt from Mac Daniel Singleton (Everett, MA). Alex Toomey (Beverly, MA) drove in Galimi with a triple to left field that put the Vikings ahead 3-0. Richard Fecteau (Newbury, MA) enhanced the score to 4-0 with a single that brought in Toomey. The Trailblazers brought in Eamonn Andre (Fairhaven, MA) with the bases loaded after Nolan walked three in a row. Andre walked Malionek to put the score at 5-0 in favor of Salem State. MCLA didn’t have any scoring opportunities after that as Buckland retired the side in the seventh to secure the complete game shutout.

Nolan went 4.2 innings pitched, allowing four earned runs on six hits, including four strikeouts. Buckland finished with two hits given up and three walks in the shutout.

Game Two
The Trailblazers’ sloppy play in the field allowed Salem State to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Rourke Flynn (Norwood, MA) reached home on a passed ball after being walked. Mike Richardson (Belmont, MA) was on the bump for the Vikings in game two and he cruised through the first five innings where he allowed just two runs off eight hits before Steve Leavitt (Peabody, MA) came on in relief in the sixth. MCLA’s Joe Dimassimo (Dalton, MA) drove in the first run with an RBI-single that was followed by a Brett LaBonte (Wareham, MA) sacrifice fly that cut the deficit to 3-2. However, the Vikings answered in the bottom of the sixth when Mike Davis (Peabody, MA) took Robert Jutras deep for his third home run this week to regain a 4-2 Vikings’ lead. Jutras struggled in the inning as he walked Deloury and then allowed two runs off wild pitches that gave Salem State a 6-2 lead. Michael Raymond (Peabody, MA) came in to close in the seventh for the Vikings as he sat the Trailblazers down in  one-two-three fashion to secure a 6-2 victory and complete the double header sweep.

Todd Hunt (Cambridge, NY) started for MCLA in game two and he went five innings giving up two earned runs off five hits.

Salem State will take the field again on April 4th when they host the Jumbos of Tufts University at 3:30 p.m. The Trailblazers will continue action on April 5th when they take on Union College at 4:00 p.m. at Union.

DANBURY, CT — After scoring seven goals in regulation, senior Nate Wilson (Norwich, CT) assisted sophomore Richard Pitman (Southbury, CT) on the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Western Connecticut State University men’s lacrosse team to a thrilling 13-12 victory over Little East Conference rival Salem State Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Pitman added three goals of his own in regulation for Western, as did senior Jesse Beatty (Redding, CT).  Wilson and Beatty each finished with three assists.

For Salem State, senior Ben Melaugh (Billerica, MA) scored four goals, followed by senior Alex Pearsons (Burlington, MA) with three goals, and junior Steve Hanley (Waltham, MA) who scored twice.

Wilson got the Colonials off to a quick start with an unassisted goal in the game’s fourth minute, but Salem State score the next three goals of the quarter for a 3-1 lead.

With three minutes remaining in the opening period and Western trailing 3-1, Pitman, Wilson, and Beatty each scored to give the Colonials a 4-3 lead after one quarter of play.

Like the first quarter, Wilson opened the scoring in the second for a 5-3 Western lead, but Melaugh answered on the next possession for Salem State to make the score 5-4.

Back to back goals by Wilson one minute apart gave Western a 7-4 advantage with nine minutes remaining in the second quarter.

The Colonials and Vikings each scored twice to close out the second half with a 9-6 Western lead.

After combining for 15 goals in the first two quarters, Western and Salem State both went scoreless over the first 12 minutes of the third period.  Senior Bobby Bourgeois (Billerica, MA) finally found the net for Salem State, for the only goal of the period.

The opening 10 minutes of the final quarter belonged to Salem State, as the visitors turned a 9-7 deficit into a 12-9 lead, starting with a goal by freshman David Dempsey (Tewksbury, MA) after only 10 seconds had be played in the fourth quarter.

With Western trailing 12-9, Wilson scored a pair of unassisted goals to cut the lead to 12-11.

Beatty got the equalizer with 1:43 showing on the clock, also unassisted, and the Western defense withstood a barrage of shots by Salem State in the closing minute to send the game into overtime.

Junior Cullen Roberts (Somers, CT) won the faceoff to begin the overtime period and Western never allowed Salem State to touch the ball.  After setting up the offense, Wilson took the ball around the back of the Salem State goal from the right side, and found Pitman just to the left of the cage.  Pitman delivered a quick shot that beat the Salem State goalie, giving Western a 13-12 victory.

For the game, Salem State held a 49-23 advantage in shots, and a 37-20 edge in ground balls.  Western’s starting keeper Patrick Tynan (Somers, CT) made 20 saves in goal to earn the victory.  Sophomore Kevin Lally (Beverly, MA) had five saves for Salem State in a losing effort.

With the win, Western improves to 2-5 on the season, and 1-0 in the Little East Conference.  Salem State falls to 5-4, and 0-1 in the LEC.  The Colonials return to action on Wednesday, April 6, when they host Farmingdale State.  Game time is slated for 7:00pm.  Salem State travels to MIT on Tuesday.
