Castleton 63 Salem State 48

Salem, Mass. — Jade Desroches (Berkshire, VT) and Lindsay Sabo (Stanhope, NJ) combined for 26 points as the Spartans of Castleton held off the Vikings of Salem State for a 63-48 victory in the final game of the Salem State Tip-Off Classic Saturday afternoon at Twohig Gymnasium. The Spartans improve to 2-0 while the Vikings even their record at 1-1. Sabo and Desroches earned All Classic honors along with Salem State’s Tyra Scott (Methuen, MA).

Sarah Callahan (Pelham, NH) got the Vikings’ offense started quickly in the first quarter as she led Salem State on a 5-0 run to open the contest after she knocked down a three-pointer on the game’s first shot. After leading 12-11 after the first quarter, Castleton took their largest lead of eight points with a 9-0 run midway through the quarter with the help from Sabo who sparked the run with a three-pointer. However, that lead would be short lived as the Vikings clawed their way back in with the help from freshmen Scott who tallied nine points in the first half that gave Salem State a slim lead of 24-23 heading into halftime.

In the third, the two sides were evenly match as they traded baskets back-and-forth the entire quarter. The Spartans defense converted six points off four Vikings’ turnovers that allowed Castleton to earn a slight 41-39 lead heading into the final quarter. The tides turned for the Salem State as they could not defend the long ball allowing Castleton’s Desroches and Sabo to knock down open looks from beyond the arc. Ali Jones (Poultney, VT) then sparked a 15-0 run with a baseline jumper that allowed the Spartans to separate from the Vikings by 16 points, 59-43. Castleton iced the win as they shot 4-4 from the free throw line in the final seconds to secure the 63-48 victory.

Desroches led all players with 16 points while Kaitlyn Byran (Lowell, MA) led the Vikings with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Salem State will travel to Anna Maria College to face the Amcats at 7:00 p.m. on November 17th. Castleton will host conference opponent, the Elms College Blazers at 7:00 p.m. on November 18th.
