Salem State Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Western Connecticut – Chen Chen Lead’s Men’s Tennis Team to Win Over Umass Dartmouth

Salem State Men’s Lacrosse Falls

SALEMEric Caldwell (East Moriches, N.Y. ) and John Foristall (Danbury, Conn.) each scored five goals and added two assists as Western Connecticut stung Salem state 19-1 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Colonials improve to 4-6, and 1-2 in the Little East while the Vikings go to 2-8 and 0-3 in conference.

Caldwell netted the first of five unanswered goals for Western Connecticut as the Colonials raced out to an early 5-1 lead. Robert Swensen (Danbury, Conn.), Christian Sparacino (Manorville, N.Y.), Sean Tynan (Somers, Conn.) and Foristall all scored a goal during the run.

Max Trifone (Saugus, Mass.) broke the string, as he scored on an assist from Michael Trifone (Saugus, Mass.)  for Salem State. However, Western Connecticut closed the half on a 6-0 run to build n 11-1 halftime lead. Foristall had three goals in that span while Caldwell had a pair and Cullen Roberts (Somers, Conn.) one.

The Colonials potted four goals apiece in the third and fourth periods to cruise to the 18-point victory.

Dylan Nyborg (Bethel, Conn.), Caldwell – two goals and Foristall all had third period scores. Matthew Paternostro (Stratford, Conn.), Jack Hamel (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) –  two goals, Johnnie Ward (Mahopac, N.Y.) all scored for Western Connecticut in the fourth.

Patrick Tynan (Somers, Conn.) picked up the win in goal for the Colonials as he stopped seven shots. Zach Craybas (Bethel, Conn.) made five saves in relief. Kevin Lally (Beverly, Mass.) corralled seven saves, before giving way to Chris Schaub (Brewster, N.Y.), who made three saves in the fourth.

Ryan Yursha (Middleton, Del.) won 14-of-17 face offs for the visitors, which outshot the Vikings 44-19.

Salem State goes to Southern Maine on Wednesday for a 6:00 PM start. Western Connecticut is at Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday with a 4:00 PM start time.

Campus Tennis Courts. The Vikings are now 2-8 and 1-1 in the Little East while the Corsairs slip to 3-8 and 0-2 in conference.

Chen defeated Corey Rafter (Franklin, Mass.) 6-1, 6-1 at first-singles and teamed with Mitchell Dyer (North Attleboro, Mass.) at first-doubles to defeat Rafter/Anthony Joseph (Fairhaven, Mass.) 9-8(7-3) as Salem State swept doubles play. Luke Hodgkins  (Winthrop, Mass.)/Noah Hodgkins (Winthrop, Mass.) won 8-4 over Patrick Pacheco (Fall River, Mass.)/Justin Torres (Dighton, Mass.) while Dan Holland (Woburn, Mass.)/Jacob Averka (Sutton, Mass.) defeated Summer Forest-Bulley (Turners Falls, Mass.)/Zach Pavao (Somerset, Mass.) 8-6.

Dyer won 7-5, 6-2 over Joseph at second singles to earn the only other point for the Vikings as UMass Dartmouth won four-of-six singles matches.  Pacheco took a close 7-6, 6-3 win over Luke Hodgkins at third singles while Torres beat Noah Hodgkins 6-0, 6-0. Forest-Bulley and Pavao each won in straight sets at fifth and sixth singles respectively for the Corsairs.

Salem State and UMass Dartmouth are both back in action on Tuesday, April 18. The Vikings travel to Southern Maine while UMass Dartmouth goes to Bridgewater State. Both matches are scheduled for 3:00 PM.
