Salem State Men’s Ice Hockey Tops Framingham State 6-0

SALEM – John Needham (Medford, Mass.) and Callum Hofford (Woodbridge, ONT) had a goal and two assists apiece and Jason Pucciarelli (Newmarket, ONT) earned the shutout in net as Salem State blanked Framingham State 6-0 on Thursday evening at Rockett Arena. The Vikings even their record at 4-4 and go to 3-2 in the MASCAC while the Rams slide to 1-7 and 0-5 in conference.

The Vikings jumped on top early with three first period goals. Needham wove through the Framingham State defense and set up Mackenzie Cook (Reading, Mass.) who deposited the backhander into a wide open net for the game’s first score just over three minutes in. Hofford  made it 2-0, converting a power play opportunity from the point that trickled past goalie Adam Calabrese (Philadelphia, Pa.). Brandon Platt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) put Salem State up by three goals when he easily beat Calabrese with a backhander midway through the first for his team-leading sixth goal of the year. The Vikings held a 14-5 advantage in shots in the period.

Three more scores by Salem State increased the lead to 6-0 in the second. A turnover by Framingham State led to Salem State’s fourth goal as Michael Casale (Stony Creek, ONT) found himself in front of the net and scored on assists from Brad Jones (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Derek Makimaa (Swartz Creek, Mich.). Needham converted a power play opportunity at 8:12 before Ryan Wilkinson (Burlington, ONT) (Beverly, Mass.) capped the scoring with his fourth of the season at the 16:30 mark.

The Vikings finished the night with 37 shots on net to just 20 for Framingham State. Calabrese made 31 saves in the loss while Pucciarelli finished with 10.

Salem State faces MASCAC opponent Worcester State in Worcester on Sunday, December 4th at 4:00 PM. Framingham State goes to UMass Dartmouth for a 4:00 PM puck drop on Saturday, December 3rd.

Men’s Basketball Edges MIT 73-70

Salem, Mass. –  AJ Jurko (Weston, Fla.) scored 22 points and added nine rebounds while Cameron Korb (Los Gatos, Calif.) added 16 points as MIT held off Salem State 73-70 Thursday evening at Twohig Gymnasium. Salem State battled back from a 10-point second-deficit behind 10 second-half points from Marcus Faison (Cambridge, Mass.) and the three-point shooting of Jacob Lindland (Hamilton, Mass.), who went 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Lindland finished with 14 points, but it was not enough as the Engineers improve to 4-2 on the season.

MIT broke open a close game midway through the first behind the strong play of Tim Butala (Monroe, Conn.) and Jurko. Butala paced MIT with 10 first-half points and six rebounds while Rust added nine points and four rebounds. An 8-0 run gave the Engineers a 21-10 lead following a three-point bucket by Jurko. MIT, which shot 48% (12-25) from the field, increased the lead to 15 points as Salem State struggled from behind the arc, going 0-10 to start the half.

Trailing 31-16, Salem State’s long-range shooting broke out of its slump, receiving a three-pointer from Rayshaw Matthews (Boston, Mass.) and two deep three’s from Lindland to pull the Vikings (4-2) to within six points at 31-25 with 1:23 remaining. Following a basket and free throw by Korb (Los Gatos, Calif.), Alex Santos (Lawrence, Mass.) hit the Vikings fourth consecutive three-pointer to close out the half to cut the deficit to just six points, 34-28 at the break.

After a quiet first half Santos (Lawrence, Mass.) sparked a 7-0 run for the Vikings with a steal and layup, as Salem State drew to within three points after a Lindland three.  A block and outlet pass from Faison led to two free throws by Shaquan Murray (Boston, Mass.) which brought Salem State to within a point, 61-60 with 4:01 remaining.  One minute later, a steal and fast break conversion by Murray gave the Vikings their first lead since early in the game, 62-61, but the lead was short lived as an offensive rebound and put back by Samuel Bockman (Oceanside, Calif.) regained the advantage for the Engineers.

MIT then went to work inside, scoring on four straight possessions inside the paint, to build a four-point cushion with 48 seconds remaining. Forced to foul, the Vikings put Jurko on the line where he knocked in two free throws. However, a layup by Faison and three-pointer by Sean Bryan (Lowell, Mass.) made the score 71-70 with one second remaining, but Korb iced the game for MIT with two makes from the charity stripe.

Butala ended the game with 14 points and seven rebounds for the Engineers. Faison added a double-double effort of 14 points and 10 rebounds while Murray and Santos each finished with 12 points apiece for the Vikings.

Salem State travels to Brandeis to take on Babson in the opening round of the New England Classic at Brandeis University. MIT hosts Lasell College on Monday, December 5th at 7:00 PM.

Women’s Basketball Tops Mount Ida 63-45

NEWTON, Mass. – With a running layup in the second quarter, Mount Ida College senior center Angelique Martinez (Taunton, Mass.) became the fourth women’s basketball player in program history and the first since 2010 to join the 1,000 point club.

Martinez needed just four points to hit the milestone entering the game, a 63-45 non-conference loss to Salem State on Thursday evening at Mount Ida Athletic Center. She managed a pair of free throws in the first quarter and then hit a layup at 7:28 of the 2nd quarter to send the crowd into delirium and her teammates into a joyous mass of celebration on the court.

It was nearly a double milestone night for the post player, as she ended up with a double-double of 12 points and 16 rebounds, inching her to just eight rebounds away from the 1,000 milestone in that department. She will become the first ever Mustang to record 1,000 rebounds in a career, male or female.

Ultimately, however, it was the 25-point performance from Salem State senior Katilyn Bryan (Lowell, Mass.) that was too much for the Mustangs to overcome, as Salem State outscored the home team 26-10 in the fourth quarter to secure what was a two point lead heading into the final frame.

The Vikings (4-3) led by 13 points at the end of the first quarter, in which they made three three-pointers, but Mount Ida climbed back into the game, as Martinez’s record-setting layup sparked a 10-2 run to close the gap to six points, and it eventually got to a 27-25 deficit by halftime for the home team.

The margin stayed at two points by the end of the third quarter, but Salem State shot 50% (8-16) from the floor in the final ten minutes and held Mount Ida to 0-7 from three-point in that quarter (1-20 for the game) to help them pull away.

Brittany Crosby (Riverside, R.I.) had the opposite double-double of Martinez, with a team-high 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Marysa Dwyer (Quincy, Mass.) provided eight points, two rebounds, two blocks and two steals off the bench.

For the Vikings, Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass.) had five rebounds in the first five minutes of the game and finished the night with 12 points and 10 boards.

Norma Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) added 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals, and Bryan also had four steals and missed a double-double by one rebound.

In the Mount Ida record books, Martinez joins Cherie Parisi, who graduated in 2010, and two members of the class of 2007, Kristin Santos and Adrienne Xenos, as the only women’s basketball players to have scored 1,000 career points.

The Mustangs (2-3) will finish their three-game run of state schools next Tuesday when they head to Fitchburg State for a 7:00 pm game.

Salem State heads to Maine the same day for a 5:30 pm date with the University of Southern Maine Huskies.
