Salem State Field Hockey Falls to Eastern Connecticut State 4-1 / Men’s Soccer Loses / SSU Volleyball Splits Tri-Meet /

SALEM – Junior Alex Kallgren (Dudley, MA) scored two goals as Eastern Connecticut State Field Hockey defeated Salem State in a Little East Conference game at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Stephanie Hogan, (Northford, CT) and junior Veronica Winthrop (Roxbury, CT) both added two points (goal and an assist) on their way to a 4-1 win over their LEC rival.

At 11:30 of the first half, Kallgren scored the first goal of the game off an assist by sophomore Stephanie Hogan (Northford, CT). Later in the half, Kallgren scored again to make it 2-0 Warriors, this time assisted by Veronica Winthrop.

In the second half, Veronica Winthrop scored unassisted to put the Warriors up 3-0. Stephanie Hogan then scored from senior Caroline Regan (Niantic, CT) at the 54:07 mark to increase the Warriors’ lead to 4-0. The Vikings averted the shutout despite having just one shot on goal as Marissa Penge (Liverpool, NY) scored late to make the final 4-1. 

Samantha Scavo (Redding, CT) started the first half and earned the win before being replaced by junior Maddie LaRusso (Enfield, CT) in the second half. LaRusso allowed the only Vikings’ goal and made one save for the game. Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, MA) of the Vikings allowed all four goals while making a solid 16 saves.

East Conn. heavily outshot SSU, 28-2, getting off 14 shots in each half.

The Vikings fall to 1-8 (0-7 in conference) as the Warriors extend their mark to 6-4 (5-2 in the LEC).

The Vikings play their next game at Westfield State in Westfield, MA on Saturday, Oct. 8th at 4:00PM. The Warriors host the Keene State Owls on the same day at Eastern Connecticut State at 12:00PM.


 MEN’S SOCCER

Salem – Mass Maritime received three first half goals, and keeper Mike Pruchnik (Rochester, MA) pitched a second half shutout as the Buccaneers came away with a 3-1 MASCAC victory over the Salem State Vikings on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. Mass Maritime improves their record to 5-3-1 (2-0-1 MASCAC) while SSU falls to 2-3-3 (0-1-2 MASCAC).

In the first half, senior Thomas McCarthy (Tybee Island, Ga.) put the Buccaneers on the board early with an assist from sophomore William Taylor (Hanover, Mass.). At the 23:28 mark, freshman Andrew Wayrynen (Rockport, MA) put home a rebound from freshman Chris Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y) for a 2-0 Bucs lead after Greg Enos made the initial save. Four minutes later, Mass Maritime extended their first-half lead with sophomore Brendan Gawron’s (Braintree, Mass.) goal assisted by junior Mick Rouette (Three Rivers, Mass.).

The Vikings shook off their slow start as freshman Lance Francois (Everett, Mass.) got Salem State on the board making it 3-1. He was assisted by senior Hatim Belmadini (Casablanca, Morocco).

The game slowed in the second half, as neither offense could get on track offensively. Maritime had the shots advantage 11-7, but with just two coming in the second half.

Pruchnik earned the win making two saves on three shots. Greg Enos (Peabody, Mass.) took the loss, ssu-enosstopping six-of-nine shots.

SSU’s next game is at Gordon College on Oct. 4th at 4PM In Wenham, MA against the Fighting Scots. Mass Maritime also plays again on the 4th at 7PM when they host the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs.

VOLLEYBALL

Salem, Mass. – WPI swept its pair of matches at Salem State on Saturday afternoon as the Engineers ssu-volleyballdefeated the host, Vikings and Curry College 3-0. Salem State defeated the Colonels in the opening match 27-25, 26-24, 25-23 before losing to the Engineers, 25-17, 25-13, and 25-15 in the final match of the day. WPI also defeated Curry 25-16, 28-26, and 25-19. WPI is now 14-3 on the season while Salem State goes to 3-14. The Colonels slip to 6-8 on the season.

Trailing 21-19 in the first set, Salem State received three service aces by Emily Russo (Newport, R.I.) to take a 23-21 lead. Nicole Grambley (North Attleboro, Mass.) kept Curry within striking distance with two aces to pull the Colonels even. However multiple errors by Curry gave Salem State a 27-25 victory. The third set was also closely contested as neither team could pull away. In a back-and-forth-battle, Salem State gained control after a kill by Haley Reed (Goffstwon, N.H.) tied the game at 21-21. Multiple errors by Curry set up a kill by Sara LaFreniere (Becket, Mass.) to ice the 25-23 Vikings’ win.  Chloe Roy (West Springfield, Mass.) led Salem State with 10 kills while Morgan Adams (Scotia, N.Y.) had 17 assists and Hanna Mullarkey (Salem, Mass.) 20 digs. Grambley topped the Colonels with seven kills and six aces and Courtney Carroll (Fairhaven, Mass.) contributed 15 digs on the defensive end.

WPI 3 Curry 0

Leading by a set, WPI held off a late rally by Curry to win the second set 28-26. In set three, the Engineers jumped out to an 11-5 lead behind a kill by Maddy Werth (Bedford, Mass.).  Curry drew to within a point at 15-14 after a kill by Grace Stafford (West Yarmouth, Mass.). Up by two, WPI took advantage of back-to-back errors by the Colonels to build a 21-18 lead. Two kills by Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, Mass.) then secured the 25-19 victory.  Werth and Colleen Mullins (Andover, Mass.) led WPI with seven kills each while Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, Mass.) had 16 assists and Kelly Rathje (Scituate, Mass.) 12 digs. Stafford led Curry with 11 points and 11 kills. Alyssa Keeney (Coventry, Conn.) had 16 assists and Courtney Carroll (Fairhaven, Mass.) 14 assists. WPI limited Curry to just a .031 hitting percentage.

WPI earned a convincing win 25-17 in the opening set behind the strong play of Casey Hunt (Granby, Conn.) who registered four kills in the first set.  Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, Mass.) had five service aces as the Engineers raced out to a 19-9 lead. WPI completed the sweep with a convincing win in set three. WPI raced out to a 14-6 lead after building a 6-1 lead to start the game, scoring five straight points behind the serve of Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, Mass.).  Salem State, which hit -.011% for the game, committed five service errors in the match. Casey Hunt (Granby, Conn.) led WPI with eight kills and Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, Mass.) registered a match-best 14 assists. Morgan Adams (Scotia, N.Y.) and Mackenzie Salls (Turner Falls, Mass.) combined for 17 assists and Hannah Mullarkey (Salem, Mass.), 21 digs for the Vikings.

Salem State and WPI are back in action again on Tuesday Oct. 4 when the Vikings travel to Salve Regina and the Engineers host Babson. The Colonels go to Endicott to take on the Gulls on Oct. 5.
