New lighting investments enhance safety at 17 dangerous crosswalks
SALEM – Mayor Dominick Pangallo has announced the installation of critical safety-driven lighting improvements at 17 crosswalk locations across the City of Salem.
This investment in the safety of the Salem community has been a multi-departmental effort. The City of Salem Department of Transportation used recent crash data to identify all the pedestrian crashes with a fatality or injury that have happened in Salem within the last 5 years. Then, a 100′ buffer around each of these crash sites, as well as all the crosswalks and streetlights within these buffers, were identified. This exercise revealed that the safety of 17 locations would be improved with enhanced lighting installations. The City of Salem Electrical Department has begun installing these lights at locations across the City, from North Salem to South Salem, and with several noted along Lafayette Street, North Street, Canal Street, Washington Street and Jefferson Avenue.
“We’re working to create safer and more accessible streets across Salem,” stated Mayor Pangallo, “This initiative is part of our larger effort to ensure a safer community for pedestrians, drivers, and bicyclists alike. It’s crucial for everyone to be able to navigate our roads safely, whether by car, bicycle, or on foot. This evidence-driven project is a continuation of our dedication to thoughtfully build a more walkable and vibrant community for all.”
