Framingham  – Salem State scored two second period goals to skate to a 2-0 shutout over Framingham

State Saturday afternoon at Loring Arena. With the win the Vikings improve to 8-8-3 and 5-6-1 in the league. The Rams are now 3-13-2 and 2-9 in the MASCAC.

After a scoreless first stanza the Vikings broke through in the 13th minute of the second when Ryan Wilkinson scored a power play goal with assists from Daniel Campbell and Dan Holland. The visitors struck again with just over a minute to play in the second, again on the power play, as Michael Casale found the back of the net with help from Callum Hofford and Campbell.

The Rams pulled their goalie towards the end of the third but couldn’t find the back of the net. Jason Pucciarelli turned away 24 shots in the shutout victory for the Vikings. Greg Harney (East Haven, Conn.) made 29 saves in the tough luck loss for the Rams.

The Vikings took advantage of the Rams ten penalties going two-for-nine on the power play. The Rams were 0-for-4 on the man advantage.

The Rams return to the ice on Tuesday, January 30th when they travel to Westfield State. The Vikings are idle Tuesday and travel to Westfield on Thursday, February 1st.


Salem State Men’s Basketball Wins

SALEM —  Salem State won for the 10th straight time, as the Vikings easily dispatched Worcester State 98-56 on Saturday afternoon in a MASCAC matchup at Twohig Gymnasium. The Vikings, who are enjoying their best run since a 16-game winning streak in 2011, improve to 17-3 and remain unbeaten in conference at 7-0. The Lancers slip to 2-18 and 1-6 in the league.

Sean Bryan (Lowell, Mass) paced four Salem State players in double figures, scoring a game-high 21 points going 6-9 (66.6%) from the field, including 3-3 from three-point range and 6-6 from the line. Shaquan Murray (Boston, Mass.) added 15 points for the Vikings, who shot 37-80 (46.3%) from the field and 12-28 (42.9%) from behind the arc.

Cal Howes (Maynard, Mass.) opened the game with a three-pointer for Worcester State, but the Vikings were relentless on offense, going on an 18-0 spurt to quickly build a 15-point lead as six different players scored for Salem State. The Lancers, who did not score for nearly six straight minutes, could not settle in on offense, turning the ball over nine times while shooting just 11-30 (36.7%) from the floor.

A trey by Chris Cardoso (Jamaica Plains, N.Y.) brought Worcester State to within 12, 21-9 with 12:34 left, but once again, Salem State answered with a 14-2 spurt, which included five points by Bryan and back-to-back three’s by Jacob Lindland (Hamilton, Mass.) that pushed the lead to 35-11 midway through the period.

The Vikings, who parlayed the nine Worcester State turnovers into 13 points, maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the half as Salem State headed into halftime leading 54-32. Shaun McCarthy (Oxford, Mass.) was the only Lancers’ player in double figures with 13 first half points.

A Bryan basket put the Vikings up by 31 at 71-40 less than six minutes into the second as Worcester State remained cold from the floor, going just 11-31 (35.5%) from the floor and 0-10 (0.0%) from behind the arc.

With the game in hand Salem State went to their bench. A steal and dunk by Nate Anderson (Boston, Mass.) pushed the lead to 40 before Anthony Hodges (Worcester, Mass.) cemented the win with a late three-pointer, as the Vikings won by 42 points, 98-56.

Tyreik McCauley (Worcester, Mass.) had 13 points and nine rebounds for Salem State while Lindland added 11 off the bench as the Vikings received 52 points from their reserves. Alex Santos (Lawrence, Mass.) had eight points and four assists and Rayshaw Matthews (Boston, Mass.) chipped in with six points and a game-high four steals. Drew Healy (Lowell, Mass.) had 10 rebounds for the Vikings.

The Lancers were led by McCarthy’s 15 points, while Bryson Gulley (Mattapan, Mass.) added eight. Will Watkins Jr. (Southbridge, Mass.) had six points and a team-high seven rebounds for Worcester State.


Salem State Women’s Basketball Loses to Worcester State

SALEM –– Kate Serprenant (Pelham, N.H.) poured in a game-high 14 points and Britt Herring (W. Brookfield, Mass.) added a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds as Worcester State earned a 61-50 victory over Salem State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Lancers improve to 10-9 and 4-3 in conference while the Vikings slip to 7-13 and 3-4 in the league.

Worcester State led by six at the end of one before pulling away late in the second quarter to take a 29-18 lead into halftime. Serprenant (Pelham, N.H.) notched seven first half points and her only three-pointer of the half to put Worcester State on top 21-14 as the Lancers closed the second quarter on an 11-4 run in building an 11-point halftime advantage. Worcester State held Salem State to just six points in the quarter on 3-14 (21.4%) shooting while the Lancers connected on 11-25 (44.0%) shots from the field. Norma Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) led the Vikings with eight first half points as the Vikings struggled on offense, shooting just 9-27 (33.3%) for the half.

A Serprenant layup gave Worcester State its largest lead 31-18 at the 9:38 mark of the third before the Vikings went on an 8-0 clip to cut the deficit to just five points 36-21 after a Tyra Scott(Methuen, Mass.) bucket. Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass.), who had nine points on the day, scored six straight for Salem State during the run. Late in the third, a three-pointer by Christina Corey (Methuen, Mass.) drew Salem State to within four points before a free throw by Emily Carens (Northboro, Mass.) gave the Lancers a 38-33 lead heading into the fourth.

Salem State stayed within striking distance until midway through the final period, when back-to-back layups and two free throws by Serprenant put Worcester State up by 12, 55-43 with 2:25 left. The Vikings never got any closer than nine points the rest of the way as the Lancers closed out the game, winning 61-50.

Kaitlyn Berkel (Aterford, Conn.) added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Worcester State, which shot 20-51 (39.2%) for the game. Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) had seven points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals in the win.

Waggett ended with eight points while Gianna Moschella (Peabody, Mass.) added nine points for Salem State, which went 21-60 (35.0%) from the floor.
