Rockport Police Arrest Two Gloucester Women for Shoplifting – Lynn Police Issue Traffic Advisory for Sunday Morning

ROCKPORT – Chief John Horvath reports that the Rockport Police Department arrested two women for shoplifting from five businesses in town yesterday.

JENNIFER VERGA, AGE 49, OF GLOUCESTER and CYNTHIA CLAYTON, AGE 60, OF GLOUCESTER were arrested for five counts of Shoplifting by Asportation.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, police received a report of two women who were possibly shoplifting in the area of Lower Main Street and Doc Square. Shop owners in the area believed the women were transferring the stolen items into bags in the backseat of a red Subaru.

Based on witness accounts, officers were able to identify VERGA and CLAYTON as the suspected shoplifters. Upon further investigation, officers discovered $460 worth of stolen merchandise from the following businesses:

  • Happy Whale/House of Glass, 59 Bearskin Neck
  • LuLa’s Pantry, 5 Doc Square
  • Shore Thing, 41 Bearskin Neck
  • Sea Again, 14 Doc Square
  • Sand Castles, 9 Mt. Pleasant St.

“Thanks to the quick response of police and the vigilance of business owners, we were able to catch these individuals and recover all of the stolen merchandise,” Chief Horvath said. “Business owners who believe they may have been a victim of shoplifting are encouraged to contact the Rockport Police Department immediately.”
