GLOUCESTER — Former Gloucester Police Chief John McCarthy will leverage decades of experience as he is appointed interim harbormaster for the City of Gloucester, effective April 10, 2024. (City officials have not commented on the need for an interim Harbormaster, nor has there been comment regarding the status of T. J. Ciaramataro, apparently now the former Harbormaster.)
With nearly 39 years of service in the Gloucester Police Department culminating in his tenure as Police Chief, McCarthy brings a wealth of knowledge, particularly from his time with the former Harbor Patrol of the Police Department.
Following his retirement from the City, McCarthy went on to serve his community for two years on the City Council, and is currently on the City of Gloucester’s Harbor Plan Committee, Capital Improvement Advisory Board, and Police and Courthouse Building Committee.
McCarthy is a lifelong boat owner and holds a captain’s license from the U.S. Coast Guard that is rated for 100 tons.
Having previously managed the large budget and staff of the police department, McCarthy agreed to step up when he was contacted about filling the interim harbormaster role.
“I’ve got a lifetime of service to the City so when they asked, I just said yes,” McCarthy said. “Pretty much my whole career I was always an operator on the boats, and I was in charge of the Police Department’s Harbor Patrol for a period of time.”
Mayor Verga said, “John’s willingness to step into the interim harbormaster role underscores his commitment to serving the community he loves. His extensive knowledge in maritime operations and experience as a City department head is a great combination to ensure that the Harbormaster’s Office continues to run smoothly and effectively. I have full confidence that John and the team will continue to provide exceptional service for Gloucester’s residents and visitors alike.”
