Update to the story – On April 20, 2023, the Commission held a public meeting to discuss the opinions shared during the public hearing. At that meeting, the Commission voted unanimously to deem the General Glover House “preferably preserved” and impose a nine-month demolition delay.
SWAMPSCOTT (Podcast – Photos) The Swampscott Historical Commission will be meeting Thursday evening (7 p.m.) to discuss the future of the General Glover House on Salem Street. In this podcast interview the chair of the Historical Commission, Nancy Schultz, shares historical information regarding the Glover House and some options that may come forward from this week’s meeting. Meeting details are posted below. The property around the Glover House will be developed into apartments and affordable housing units, however there is interest in preserving the original house or elements of the house. The Glover House holds a rich historical connection to the American Revolution, and it is believed that General George Washington may have stayed at the house. The historical context of General Glover and the property are detailed in the podcast. Schultz also shares updates on several other properties in Swampscott that have come before the commission.
