Sean Moore – Danvers High Moynihan Lumber Student Athlete of the Month with Bill Newell

Story by Phil Stacey (Salem News)

The 17-year-old Moore has had a terrific season running for the Falcons. Last fall he was one of the top harriers of the school’s first-ever boys state cross country champions. After a strong indoor season this past winter, he has shined outdoors this spring. After teammate Will Conklin broke the school’s 2-mile record at the Weston Twilight Meet, Moore claimed it back by running a 9:25 at the same event.

“To not only have one person break the record but both of us that same night was really special,” said the 6-foot-1, 135-pound Moore. “We’re both really good friends, too. We’re close as a team; there’s about 10-15 of us that run all three seasons and spend a ton of time together.” Moore finished in second place in the 800 meters by 1/10th of a second at the Northeastern Conference Meet and also ran the mile at the Andover Boosters Meet, taking fifth place. He ran both the 2-mile and mile at last weekend’s Division 4 Championships and has already qualified to run at the Nike Nationals in Eugene, Ore. next month. “When I’m out there I tell myself not to lose focus or forget what your goal is,” said Moore. “If someone is in front of you, lock in on them and keep that focus. And if you find your mind wandering, snap out of it and refocus.”

An honor roll student, Moore will graduate with a 3.7 grade point average. He’s been serving an internship at Harmeling Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine in his hometown with hopes of one day working in physical therapy. He’ll be off to Merrimack later this summer to study rehabilitation sciences while running all three seasons for the Warriors. “I have to keep myself motivated to get right on my homework after I get home from practice or a meet,” said Moore, noting his favorite class and teacher was AP Stats with Mr. (Jeff) Avigian. “What I’ve learned is if I have an assignment, it’s better to finish it sooner rather than later. If I push it off, it never ends well. Bottom line: don’t procrastinate.”
