Notice of Work from the Rockport Department of Public Works

Rockport Department of Public Works

NOTICE (Weeks of 6/17 – 6/28):

The Town of Rockport’s contractor, National Water Main Cleaning Company (NWMCC), will be performing sewer cleaning and inspection operations in the eastern part of Town including portions of Norwood Ave, Old Garden Road, Gully Point Road, Allen Ave, Atlantic Ave, Harraden Ave, Pool Place, Calebs Lane, Marmion Way, South Street, Jerdens Lane, Summer Street, Marthas Lane, Seagull Street, Canterbury Lane, Charles Lane, Oak Circle, Country Club Road, and Stable Lane. The work is part of the DPW’s sewer rehabilitation project and is being implemented to:

  • Clean sewer pipes in advance of sewer rehabilitation to improve your level of service.
  • Assess the condition of the public sewer to identify maintenance requirements.

The work will be performed by NWM under the direction of the Town’s Engineer, Kleinfelder. The work process includes high performance specialized sewer cleaning equipment that utilizes high pressure cleaning nozzles, root cutters, and vacuum technology. Following the cleaning process, the sewer will be assessed using robotic self-propelled video equipment.

During the cleaning process some homes occasionally experience back pressure of air into the sewer service, internal plumbing, and home plumbing vent. When this occurs, water in toilets and drains may bubble or surge, or in rare instances splash out of the bowl. Many different variables may cause this condition. As a preventative measure, homeowners and tenants may consider keeping toilet lids closed and covering or plugging floor drains while the cleaning is taking place.

Additionally, the contractor may need to access manholes located within sewer easements located near to or within your property with field personnel on foot and/or with specialized easement vehicles. The contractor has been instructed to stay within easement boundaries. Work efforts will be performed in a timely manner if easements are well maintained and free of debris. The contractor will knock on your door prior to gaining access to the easement and will ask to unlock/open any gates obstructing easement accessibility.

The DPW makes every effort possible to minimize inconveniences utilizing experienced operators and quality equipment. In the event that you experience issues related to the cleaning program, please contact the field representative with the cleaning crew immediately. If the issue occurs when you are not at home, or if you have any questions, please contact Andrew Flannagan(NWMCC) at 617-719-9353 or Kleinfelder at 508-370-8256.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation with these critically important activities.
