LAWRENCE FIREFIGHTER ARRAIGNED IN HOSPITAL AND HELD WITHOUT BAIL

Joseph Carberry, 39, was arraigned in Lawrence General Hospital this afternoon.  He was charged with Discharging a Firearm within 500 feet of a Building, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Disorderly Conduct, and Threats to Commit a Crime.  Judge Michael Brooks ordered him held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Friday, September 9th.

Essex ADA Lindsay Nasson told the court that Lawrence Police responded to the defendant’s home on a report of a domestic early this morning.  They were advised that the defendant was intoxicated and armed.  After hearing one or two gunshots from inside the home, a large dog exited the front door of the home, and was barking and growling at the officers.  They commanded the defendant to take control of the dog.  Officers fired at the dog in an effort to stop it from charging at the officers.  The defendant was again ordered to take control of his dog, which he did.  As officers took him into custody, he told them that he had shot himself in the leg.  He was transported to Lawrence General Hospital.

The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
