NSCC’s to Celebrate 50th Commencement May 26

North Shore Community College will hold its 50th Commencement Thursday, May 26 with First Lady Lauren Baker as Commencement Speaker. The college expects to bestow approximately 1,000 associate degrees and certificates at the graduation, which will be held at Salem State University, 6-8 p.m.

NSCC Student Government Association President Nathaniel Montero of Salem will be the student speaker. Vedad Konjic of Lynn, a 2005 graduate of NSCC’s business management program, will receive the NSCC Alumni Association’s 2016 Distinguished Alumnus Award and Kevin Evangelista `16 will be the student soloist.

This year’s graduating class will raise the total number of NSCC alumni to over 38,000.  In its first 50 years it is estimated that 250,000 people have taken courses at the college’s three campuses in Danvers, Lynn and Middleton, or online.

In September 1965, NSCC opened its doors at the former Briscoe School in Beverly to welcome 474 students to five programs of study. Today NSCC has grown into a comprehensive community college offering 80 associate degree and certificate programs to 9,000 students annually. The college is a resource for the 500,000 residents of the 26 cities and towns along the coastal region north of metropolitan Boston to Cape Ann.

NSCC is a catalyst for personal, community and regional growth through education, training and civic engagement. Blending tradition and innovation, liberal arts and career preparation, intellectual development and cultural and personal growth, we foster a diverse and caring community of learners where all are welcome and each is challenged.

NSCC offers excellent educational opportunities to anyone seeking an education. The college’s student population is diverse in terms of age, income, work history, educational backgrounds and goals, culture and ethnicity. The student population includes traditional college-aged students, adult learners, middle- to low-income earners, first-generation college-goers, veterans, those seeking additional skills or career changes, the unemployed and under-employed and recent immigrants. Over 80% of NSCC graduates stay to live and work on the North Shore, making them a vital part of the region’s workforce and economy.

“It is so exciting to be celebrating North Shore Community College’s 50th Commencement,” said College President Patricia A. Gentile. “Commencement is always a wonderful occasion, but this year is really going to be very special. We have invited members of the first graduating class to return to participate and are so honored to have the First Lady of the Commonwealth with us for this very special evening.”
