NORTH READING — Chief Michael Murphy announced that the North Reading Police Department will offer another Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Self Defense Course in June.
The 12-hour program is taught by certified instructors and incorporates awareness, verbal tactics, and defensive physical skill training into a self-confidence building program. Classroom work is followed by hands-on tactical practice and dynamic simulations.
This nationally certified course intends to empower women. “I didn’t think I’d have the courage to defend myself, much less the strength, but I did,” a past participant of the course said. “The (instructors) were tough, respectful, and extremely efficient at what they do. I thank them to make me achieve what I thought I couldn’t.”
The summer 2023 program will be held on:
- Monday, June 5, from 6-9 p.m. at the North Reading Police Department
- Wednesday, June 7, from 6-9 p.m. at the North Reading High School Auxiliary Gym.
- Tuesday, June 13, from 6-9 p.m. at the North Reading High School Auxiliary Gym.
- Wednesday, June 14, from 6-9 p.m. at the North Reading High School Auxiliary Gym.
Participants must attend all four dates to complete the course.

“The RAD approach uses simple techniques that people can remember and use effectively in emergency situations. The course will increase participants’ situational awareness and help them become more confident,” Chief Murphy said. “The course is very empowering. I encourage all woman to attend.”
