North Reading Police Department Extends Participation in the Home Base No Shave Initiative

NORTH READING — Chief Mark Zimmerman is pleased to share that the North Reading Police Department is extending its participation in the Home Base No Shave initiative and allowing officers to maintain facial hair throughout the month of December.

In September, the North Reading Police Department participated in Home Base Save a Life September, a campaign aimed at increasing awareness and support for military and first-responder suicide prevention. During Save a Life September, which was held in recognition of National Suicide Prevention Month, North Reading Police Department officers made donations to Home Base to support the organization’s efforts to support military families and first responders.

In November, North Reading Police participated in the Home Base No Shave initiative, with officers pledging $100 to Home Base in exchange for being able to grow facial hair during the month. Officers pledged a total of $3,600 to Home Base as a result of their efforts in September and November.

Chief Zimmerman has now extended the department’s participation through December.

Although the department has not set financial requirements for continued participation, officers have been invited to make a donation to either the North Reading Food Pantry or North Reading Toys for Tots in the name of the North Reading Police Department.

“I’m extending our temporary policy allowing facial hair for officers who contribute and inviting officers to also contribute to two great causes here in the North Reading community,” said Chief Zimmerman. “I am proud of the generosity shown by members of the North Reading Police Department again this year.”
