NEWBURYPORT — Marshal Matthew Simons is pleased to share that Newburyport Police School Resource Officer Kyle McElroy received a Public Service Award.

SRO McElroy received a Public Service Award from Mayor Sean Reardon during the Newburyport State of the City Address held on Feb. 26. SRO McElroy was recognized for his dedication and diligent work in Newburyport schools.

During the ceremony, SRO McElroy received a plaque of recognition. Gov. Maura Healey was also in attendance.

SRO McElroy is currently assigned to all Newburyport Schools and was nominated by another officer in the department.

As a testament to his commitment to the safety of students and the school community, the Newburyport High School Class of 2024 dedicated their yearbook to SRO McElroy. Students, who call him ‘Officer Kyle’, wrote about how he always puts a smile on everyone’s face, making school a welcoming and positive place.

“He was always kind to everyone in our grade, super easy to talk to, and showed that he cared about us,” and “He protects our class and advocates for safety”, were just a few of the statements about SRO McElroy published in the yearbook.

SRO McElroy graduated from Salem State with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and was hired as a Newburyport Police Officer in 2016. He has been an SRO since 2021.

“Kyle has been an amazing asset to our community in his role as the SRO,” said Marshal Simons. “The fact that he was nominated by one of his peers highlights the culture of teamwork within our police department. I’m grateful for the work of Officer McElroy and our team of officers that have made our schools a top priority.”
