NEWBURYPORT — City Marshal Mark Murray and the Newburyport Police Department would like to recognize Officer Megan Muldowney for her participation in the 40th Annual Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 25.
“We are very excited for Officer Muldowney’s accomplishment in completing this marathon,” City Marshal Murray said. “A marathon takes great training, endurance, and self-discipline, and she should be very proud of her efforts.”
Officer Muldowney raised $675 to support the Corporal Chris G. Scherer Semper Fi Fund, which provides a scholarship and a supply-gathering project called “Leave No Marine Behind”. She ran the marathon, which was her first, in 4 hours 54 minutes.
During her trip to Washington, D.C. Officer Muldowney was also able to visit the Law Enforcement Memorial and placed a Newburyport Police challenge coin at the marker of fallen Officer John Page, Jr., who was killed when his department motorcycle was struck by a vehicle in 1927.
Officer Muldowney attributes her motivated to become a police officer to her aunt, Ann Muldowney, who retired from the Marines in 2008 as a Master Sergeant and pinned Officer Muldowney’s badge on her at the police academy graduation.
