Newburyport Police and Fire Respond to Discovery of Possible Pipe Bombs in Home Under Construction

NEWBURYPORT — Marshall Mark Murray and Fire Chief Stephen Bradbury report that the Newburyport Police and Fire Departments responded Thursday to the discovery of possible pipe bombs in a home under construction.

On Thursday, Oct. 19, at approximately 2:03 p.m., Newburyport Police and Fire were dispatched to a home on Purchase Streetafter contractors located a box that contained what appeared to be four pipe bombs.

The home is under construction and no one is living there at this time. The property owner was not aware of the presence of the box until it was discovered by contractors.

Newburyport Fire and Police secured the scene. The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad was called to the scene and x-rayed the possible bombs, but were unable to tell for sure whether they are actually bombs or props.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Bomb Squad will be removing the items from the home and taking them to a secluded area off Colby Farm Road to safely destroy the items.

There is no threat to the general public.
