NEWBURYPORT – Mayor Sean Reardon is pleased to announce the appointment of Christian Cyr as Chief of Staff.
Cyr brings a wealth of experience to the position, including working with local elected officials, government agencies, and community organizations. For the past five years, he has led and managed international democracy programs in the Asia-Pacific region.
“I am thankful for the opportunity to work on behalf of the residents of the city I love,” Cyr said. “I look forward to working alongside Mayor Reardon and the entire administrative staff to deliver on his vision for Newburyport.”
Cyr is a 2014 graduate of Newburyport High School. During that time, he volunteered with the Newburyport Youth Council and served on the board of the Newburyport Education Foundation.
Cyr received a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (Communications, Law, Economics, and Law) from American University and a Master’s degree in Development Management from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Most recently, he served as a Program Manager for the International Republican Institute (IRI), a nonpartisan organization working to empower citizens and bolster democratic governance around the world. At IRI, he led teams in Washington, D.C., Fiji, and Timor-Leste to implement grants focused on bolstering civic education, strengthening civil society groups, and empowering emerging young leaders.
He also worked with the National Endowment of Democracy, managing an international youth fellowship program and the National Democratic Institute, where he administered projects focused on eliminating violence against women in politics and strengthening the capacity of human rights advocacy groups.
Further, he interned in the offices of U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and then-state Sen. Kathleen O’Connor Ives, and served as manager of Amber Hewett’s campaign for State Representative in 2020.
“Christian really rose to the top in the finalist interviews. He understands the complexities of the role and he will complement the other members of our great staff at City Hall,” Mayor Reardon said. “Being from Newburyport, Christian shares my love for our hometown and I look forward to working together to make Newburyport even better.”
Cyr will begin work in January. He looks forward to returning to the city and to working with Mayor Reardon, city officials, the City Council, and residents to help build a community that generates opportunities, sparks innovation, and serves to better the well-being of all residents.
