NEWBURYPORT — Chief Stephen Bradbury reports that the Newburyport Fire Department responded to a fire Monday evening on Broad Street.
Emergency crews received a call at 5:54 p.m. about a fire at 15 Broad St., a two-level home. Upon arrival, crews spotted smoke coming out the front door.
Firefighters quickly attacked the blaze and contained it to a laundry and pantry area in the rear of the house. Heat and smoke damage extended throughout the house.
No one was home at the time. A family dog died, despite firefighters’ valiant efforts to save the dog with extended CPR.
Four Newburyport engines and a Newburyport ladder responded to the scene, as did an engine from Salisbury and a ladder truck from Amesbury.
Station coverage was provided by firefighters from Rowley and Seabrook, N.H.
The fire does not appear to be of suspicious origin. The Newburyport Fire Department continues to investigate the cause.
