NEWBURYPORT — Deputy Chief Barry Salt reports that the Newburyport Fire Department extinguished a two-alarm fire early Saturday at a duplex.
Neighbors called 911 at 3:39 a.m. Saturday after observing a fire in one half of a duplex at 32 Strong St. Upon arrival, crews discovered that fire had traveled up the walls and into the first- and second-floor ceilings.
It took about 90 minutes to get the fire under control.
The occupants of the damaged half of the duplex were not home. The occupants of the other side of the duplex were able to escape, with assistance from the Newburyport Police Department. There were no injuries.
“Our first engine was at another call, but firefighters pivoted quickly and did a great job on this fire,” Deputy Chief Salt said. “Great work by our firefighters and those from our mutual aid partners were a big reason why the damage wasn’t more extensive.”
Mutual aid was provided by the Amesbury, Newbury, Salisbury and Seabrook, N.H., fire departments. Rowley, Newbury and Hampton, N.H., crews provided station coverage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Newburyport Fire Department.
