Newburyport Cooling Centers Saturday and Sunday

City Buildings Will Be Open as Cooling Centers During Heat Wave

Heat Wave Advisory

With high temperatures expected to continue on Saturday, July 23rd and Sunday, July 24th, the City wants residents to know that City buildings will be available as cooling centers. On Saturday, the Newburyport Public Library at 94 State Street will be open from 9am to 5pm and the public is welcome to visit to enjoy the cool air. The Senior/Community Center at 331 High Street will be open on Sunday from 11am to 4pm for all who need a break from the heat. Thanks to the COA staff who will be expanding their hours this day to accommodate those who need these services.

Extreme heat is a prolonged period of very hot weather, which may include high humidity. In Massachusetts, a “heat wave” is usually defined as a period of three or more consecutive days above 90 degrees. Temperatures are currently forecast at a high of over 90 degrees  through Sunday. Humidity levels above 45% are also expected multiple days this week. You can find more information and safety tips for a heat wave here.
