NEC North: Marblehead Champs 4th Year in a Row with 10-7 Win over Danvers

MARBLEHEAD – (Video) The Marblehead Magicians (7-0) overcame the running of Matt McCarthy (13 carries  for 106 yards in the first quarter, 21 for 124 overall) of the Danvers Falcons (5-2) to win tonight’s showdown for first place, 10 to 7.

All of the scoring came in the 4th quarter.  Marblehead quarterback Andy Clough engineered a 13-play, 80-yard touchdown drive when he carried the ball in from 2 yards out to open the scoring with 10:49 left in the game.

Danvers answered 1 minute and 39 seconds later following a 68 yard kick off return by Tahj Coakely that set the Falcons up at the Marblehead 10 yard line.  Justin Mullaney punched it in from 2 yards away to tie the game at 7 with 9:10 left to play.

Then, after the Falcons stopped Marblehead on the Danvers 2 yard line and a penalty pushed the Magicians out to the 12, Danvers fumbled the ball back to Marblehead after the exchange on downs. Another goal-line stand by Danvers forced Marblehead to try a field goal that set up Phelan Tinti-Kane’s 30 yard game-winner who put the ball right down the middle of the uprights.
