ENDICOTT PRESS CONFERENCE (Friday Afternoon)
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The No. 4/8 Endicott baseball team lost to No. 10/12 Baldwin Wallace, 13-9, in its opening round game of the NCAA Division III College World Series (CWS) on Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
WP (10-0): Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) — 7 1/3 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 5 KLP (10-2): Gabe Van Emon (Lexington, Mass.) — 2 2/3 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Designated hitter Danny MacDougall (Taunton, Mass.) highlighted the offense with a 4-for-5 showing at the plate to go along with two runs scored and a career-high five RBI.
MacDougall now has 20 multi-hit games this season (tied for third on the team), including two four-hit contests.
Joseph Millar (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot, while Caleb Shpur (East Canaan, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI from the two-hole.
On the mound, Will Fox (West Hartford, Conn.) provided some length in relief for the Gulls going three innings while yielding two hits, one run (earned), and no walks alongside three punchouts.
ENDICOTT SCORING
- Bottom 1st (tied 1-1): Nicolas Notarangelo (Taunton, Mass.) rocked a two-out double off the left field wall before MacDougall drove him in for the game-tying run on a first pitch single through the left side
- Bottom 3rd (trailing 4-2): Shpur chopped an infield RBI single to short following a sacrifice bunt by Millar that moved two runners into scoring position
- Bottom 3rd (trailing 4-3): Notarangelo lifted a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Liponis; Baldwin Wallace left fielder Ryan Guggenheim made a smooth, jumping catch while navigating and side-stepping against the 15-foot high left field wall (estimate) on the warning track to rob an extra-base hit from Notarangelo
- Bottom 8th (trailing 13-4): MacDougall skied an RBI single to right field plating Millar from third base; it was his second RBI of the day and 26th of the season, at the time
- Bottom 8th (trailing 13-5): Robbie Wladkowski (Norwood, Mass.) ripped a run-producing base knock to right field bringing home Shpur, also from third base
- Bottom 8th (trailing 13-6): Dylan Pacheco (Dartmouth, Mass.) pulled a worm burner through the 5.5-hole for another run
- Bottom 9th (trailing 13-9): MacDougall pelted a three-run shot over the left field fence into the picnic area for his fifth homer of the season
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Endicott made its first-ever appearance in the CWS today
- MacDougall launched the Gulls’ first-ever homer in the CWS
- TJ Liponis (Scarborough, Maine) nearly hit the Gulls’ first CWS homer in the fifth inning, but his towering fly ball plunked the top of the 15-foot left field wall (estimate) and caromed over the fence directly below it for a ground-rule double; the left field line measures 315 feet, but the left field wall enters the playing area and about 15 to 20 feet in, goes back at an angle, and then straightens out again creating some interesting bounces when the ball goes off the wall, as evidenced by Liponis’ ground-rule double (some info courtesy of Stadium Journey)
- Baldwin Wallace had its leadoff hitter reach successfully in the first three innings, eventually scoring all three frame-starters on singles (1st, walk | 2nd, walk | 3rd, infield single to first)
