The North Shore Navigators fell to the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs 8-1 in a Tuesday matinee, falling to 20-30 on the season.

Wachusett stormed the Navigators last week at Fraser Field, accumulating small run totals to overwhelm the score. That was again the case on Tuesday, with runs scored across five innings. The Dirt Dawgs scored three in the third in a game the Navigators were never able to catch up in.

Jack Gethings walked aboard and moved over on a single by Bradley Wood. Mike Coggeshall singled to bring in Wood and bring on two for Zack Tower, a perennial thorn in the Navigators’ side. He sailed a double to deep center to score Wood. Another single by Kyle Cala would bring in Coggeshall and Tower, but a hard tag by catcher Keith Linnane (UMass Amherst) ended the inning.

The Navigators loaded the bases twice in the game but were unable to convert any of their seven hits for runs, stranding 15 in the game.

Leadoff man Cala singled on to start another small ball set to bring in another run in the top of the sixth. Kessinger doubled to put both men in scoring position and a ground ball to third served enough to get the fourth run across.

Wachusett continued with late game action, scoring three in the seventh inning to put the game too far out of reach for the North Shore. A single and a hit by pitch started the seventh for relief pitcher Myles Levy. A single followed by a double brought in two runs. A grounder to first would make it 7-0 Dirt Dawgs, and give the first out of the inning. The Navigators defense would cap the damage there with a strikeout and fly out.

The Navigators pushed to avoid the shutout despite the contact on the afternoon and were successful in the bottom of the eighth. Austin Masel (Holy Cross) lead off the inning with a single and would be the only North Shore man to come home. Alec Cargin (Wofford) was hit by a pitch to advance Masel to second and a walk by Brad Douglas (Rhode Island) loaded the bases. Patience by Linnane earned a walk and the only run of the afternoon.

The Dawgs would punch in an eighth run in the top of the ninth, as Thomas Hughes would work his single and stolen base into a run for.

The Navigators travel to Bristol for one of the last two road games of the regular season. Fraser will host three straight Navigators games across the weekend from Thursday to Saturday.
