NAHANT – Chief Austin Antrim reports that the Nahant Fire Department, with support from its mutual aid partners, extinguished a fire in a single-family home.
On Saturday, Feb. 4, at about 11:49 a.m., Nahant firefighters were dispatched to 1 Fallon Way for a reported fire. Firefighters arrived three minutes later, and reported smoke showing from a two-story residential structure.
Firefighters Frank Pappalardo and Matthew Canty entered the structure and determined no one was home, and located the source of the fire in the kitchen. Firefighters Pappalardo and Canty, with the assistance of Nahant police officers, stretched a 1 ¾-inch line from Engine 31 into the home.
Chief Antrim arrived on scene and declared a working fire, bringing additional resourced at the scene. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control, overcoming water flow issues caused by the extreme cold.
Crews from Nahant Ladder 31 and Engine 32 also reported to the scene, supported by crews from Lynn Engine 5 and Swampscott Engine 21. Crews secured utilities and checked for fire extension.
Atlantic Ambulance responded with an emergency medical services vehicle on standby. Rehab 5 provided its trailer to offer firefighters a heated space and warm drinks. The American Red Cross provided support to the homeowner.
The home sustained fire damage in the kitchen, and smoke and water damage in other areas. No one was injured.
“Extreme weather poses many challenges in fighting a fire. The quick response by Nahant firefighters and our mutual aid and community partners made a tremendous difference. I thank them along with Lynn Dispatch for their assistance,” Chief Antrim said. “This is our second serious fire in two weeks that could have had a more significant outcome if not for the teamwork and professionalism everyone has shown.”
