BEVERLY, Mass. – (Video Interview) The Endicott baseball team opened up Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Sunday afternoon at North Field with a doubleheader sweep of Roger Williams by scores of 2-1 (game one) and 6-3 (game two).

GAME ONE – Endicott 2, Roger Williams 1 (seven innings)

Endicott sophomore right-hander Will Ferreira (Nantucket, Mass.) tossed a complete-game three-hitter alongside one run (earned), three walks, and a game-high five strikeouts to move his record to 2-0 on the season.

Jimmy Smith (Walpole, Mass.) suffered the loss (2-3) on six innings, two runs (both earned), five walks and one strikeout.

The Gulls took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Matthew Paola (Middlebury, Conn.) scored on the backend of a double steal attempt before Cody Hall (Rutland, Mass.) was caught stealing second (1-3-4-3-6).

Endicott added another run in third on an RBI single through the right side of the infield, which proved to be the difference as the Hawks cut the deficit in half at 2-1 on a wild pitch with runners at second and third.

Ferreira limited the damage in the frame, however, as he stranded the game-tying run at third base with a strike out looking to end the inning and Roger Williams’ scoring threat.

After recording the final out of the fourth with a strikeout looking, Ferreira stymied the Hawks the rest of the way by facing only one batter over the minimum down the stretch.

GAME TWO – Endicott 6, Roger Williams 3 (seven innings)

Gulls’ reliever Davarn Nova (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) picked up the victory (2-3) as the senior right-hander pitched three shutout innings out of the pen. Owen Bautze (Sudbury, Mass.) received the no-decision on 2 2/3 innings of work (5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO), while Colby Morris (Newburyport, Mass.) bridged the gap to Nova with a strong relief appearance (1 1/3 innings, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO).

Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.) was dealt the loss (1-2) through five innings of work, alongside four hits, five runs (two earned), four free passes, and a game-high six punchouts.

Roger Williams struck first in the top of the third via an RBI single to center by Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) and a two-run double to the left-center gap from Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) to claim a 3-0 advantage.

In the bottom half of the frame, Mike Kochiss (Fairfield, Conn.) responded for the Gulls when he stung a two-out bases clearing double to right field that evened the score at 3-3. Paola, Chris Seidl (Dracut, Mass.), and Brad Rebello (Bellingham, Mass.) all scored on the play.

The Hawks threatened to retake the lead in the fourth with runners at second and third and one out, but Seidl gunned down a potential go-ahead run at home after securing a 1-3 groundout at first base to keep the score tied at 3-3.

Seidl then went on to give Endicott the lead for good in the fifth with a two-run blast to deep left field that gave the Gulls a 5-3 gap on the scoreboard. Hall also added a sacrifice fly to center in the sixth, while Nova secured the sweep over the final two innings with a key bases loaded double play (6-4-3) in the sixth and a pair of ground outs and a fly out in the seventh.

  • Morris has only allowed three inherited runners to score out on a team-high 12 changes.

FOR THE FOES

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Endicott men’s golf team tied for second place at the Hampton Inn Classic Invitational, hosted by UMass Dartmouth, earlier this weekend at the Allendale Country Club.

Husson University took home the top spot among 18 competing teams with a two-day score of 642, while Salem State University and Endicott posted an identical two-day score of 645 to tie for the runner-up position. Rhode Island College was fourth with a two-day score of 647, and Johnson & Wales University rounded out the top-5 with a two-day score of 649.

Individually, Austin Teal (Loudonville, N.Y.) came in second place by shooting 150 (76 / 74) over the two-day event. Drew Benshoff (Concord, Mass.) ranked tied for eighth (160 score, 83 / 77), while Ben Palazzo (Farmington, Conn.) was tied for 30th overall (165 score, 85 / 80). Alex Viola (Brunswick, Maine) came in 55th (tied, 173 score, 86 /87) and Dan Negus (Pembroke, Mass.) concluded the list of highlights for the Gulls with a 63rd place finish (tied) with a two-day score of 174 (90 / 84).

TOP QUOTE

“We showed extreme patience and perseverance in conditions that most golfers wouldn’t even attempt to play in! Forty-degree weather and 25 mile-per-hour winds on day one made scores balloon, but the squad hung in there and put themselves in a position to win on day two,” said Endicott men’s golf head coach Tom Smith. “We came up just a bit short in the second round, but we respect the great round our competitors put together. This momentum should bode well for us as we prepare for the Johnson and Wales Invitational and the third leg of the spring shootout. We are only six shots back overall and I think we can catch the leaders next weekend. I’m happy with our progress early in the season with the limited practice due to the weather this spring.”

BEYOND THE SCORECARD

  • The Gulls placed the highest out of any Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) program over the two-day invitational as Nichols ranked sixth (651), Wentworth checked in at No. 13 (686), and Roger Williams was No. 17 overall (709).
  • Teal turned in the highest individual placement of the season for Endicott with his second place showing this weekend.
  • Last season, Teal placed fourth overall at the Hampton Inn Classic with a two-day score of 154 (77 / 77).

WHAT’S NEXT

Endicott returns to action next weekend (April 16-17) at the Johnson & Wales Invitational at the Cranston Country Club, in Cranston, Rhode Island.

SALEMSalem State and MCLA split a MASCAC softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon in a makeup from April 2. The Trailblazers took the first game 7-3 in eight innings before the Vikings rebounded with a come-from-behind, 4-3 victory in game two. In game one, Rachael Quackenbush (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs and Abby Lucas (Braintree,Mass.) hit a bases loaded double in the eighth that drove in three runs to propel MCLA to victory. In game two, Dahlia DeCologero (Woburn, Mass.) lofted a two-out single over the right fielder’s head that scored Jen Crovo (Melrose, Mass.) from first with the game-winning run.  Salem State improves to 7-11 and 2-2 in conference while MCLA goes to 8-10 and 2-2 in the MASCAC.

Game 1
Quackenbush took a two-hitter into the sixth inning as MCLA clung to a 1-0 lead. The Trailblazers scored the only run of the game in the third when Quackenbush singled in Julie Watson (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) from third. Trailing 1-0, Salem State’s offense awoken in the bottom of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Following a leadoff walk to Marisa Sanchez (Framingham, Mass.), Rebecca Krigman(Malden, Mass.) singled to put runners on first and third. Desiree Moreno (Ashburnham, Mass.) followed with a two-run double to put the Vikings on top.  However, MCLA tied the game in the top of the seventh when Jenn Sicinski (Shelton, V.T.) drove in Chelsea Coleman (Brookfield, Conn.) with a double from first.

With the scored tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth, the Trailblazers’ first three batters reached base before Angelica Perfido (Whately, Mass.) drove in the go-ahead run with a base hit. Lucas then doubled to deep right center to drive in three more runs before Coleman capped the scoring for MCLA, which suddenly led 7-2, with a base hit. Moreno added an RBI single for the Vikings in the bottom of the inning, but that would be all as the Trailblazers won 7-3.

lleish Burney (Bristol, Conn.) went the distance for Salem State, pitching eight innings and allowing seven runs (five earned) on 13 hits with a strikeout.  Coleman finished 3-for-4 for MCLA while Lucas added two hits and three RBI. Moreno finished 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Vikings.

Game 2
The Trailblazers reached the scoreboard first in game two, scoring a run in the fourth on a double by Lucas. The Vikings answered in the bottom of the inning when Jess Raymond (Peabody, Mass.) knocked in DeCologero, who had doubled.

Neither starting pitcher lasted past the fifth. Katie Henault started for MCLA and went 4.1 innings and allowed a run on six hits with three strikeouts. Vikings’ starter Meghan Black (Winchendon, Mass.) went five complete, allowing four hits and a run before being lifted for Rachael Cyr (Amesbury, Mass.). Both game one starters returned to the mound with Quackenbush relieving for MCLA in the fifth and Burney figuring in the decision for Salem State by coming in for Cyr in the sixth. The Trailblazers built a two-run cushion in the sixth when Sam Boyle (Pittsfield, Mass.) hit a single with the bases loaded that plated two runs. Once again, Salem State answered in the bottom of the sixth as three straight singles loaded the bases with two outs. Raymond scored on a wild pitch and Moreno walked putting Sanchez on third who then scored on a passed ball, tying the game 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh , Quackenbush quickly retired the first two batters, but a single by Crovo set up DeCologero for the game-winning hit and a 4-3 Vikings’ victory.

Watson went 2-for-3 for MCLA while DeCologero finished 2-for-3 with a run and RBI for the Vikings. Burney picked up her sixth win of the season in relief.

Salem State travels to Endicott for a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 PM while MCLA is at Bay Path for two games with a 3:00 PM start time.
