Girls Lacrosse Note from Friday Action – Hamilton-Wenham Season Ends
In a thrilling back-and-forth showdown, Weston (2nd seed) defeated Hamilton Wenham (7th seed) 17-15 in the MIAA Girls Lacrosse State Championship. The Generals’, making their first appearance in the Elite 8, proved their rightful place among top contenders.
The Generals quickly showed they were there to play by scoring early and often. Avery Nistl kicked off the scoring for the Generals 45 seconds in, quickly followed by Maisie Leland. Weston responded, only to be countered by a string of three goals by Evie Bernard and her sister, Stewart. At 20:52 it’s 5-1 Generals, Weston calls a time out to regroup.
Weston battled back and tied it up 5-5, time out Generals. At 16:22 Weston pulls ahead for the first time, 6-5. They keep their lead, but Hamilton Wenham keeps them within reach, scoring with 10 seconds left to end the half 11-10.
The tug of war continued in the second half, with a giant pull by the Generals’ Grace Glidden, who tied it up 13-13 and then continued to score two more times to pull them ahead 15-13. In the end, the Generals held the relentless Weston attack well but couldn’t stop them, with Weston chipping away over the last 8 minutes to catch and surpass the Generals, 17-15.
The game displayed the talents of the freshman standout Evie Bernard (7 goals, 1 assist, 12 draw controls) while also highlighting the Generals’ offensive depth in Grace Glidden (3 goals), Stewart Bernard (2 goals), Avery Nistl (2 goals, 1 draw control), and Maisie Leland (1 goal), all returning next year.
The Generals defense, also returning next season, stood tall against the strong, seasoned Weston attack. Ava Shultz and Lucy Ayers kept the team focused and strategically honed in on the top scorers, while goalie Ava Vautour had 8 key saves in goal, many at close range.
The Generals end their season 13-8, and are looking forward to continuing their success this season next year.
