Dear Newburyport/Rockport Line riders and neighbors:

The MBTA is pleased to announce the launch of new and updated tools to provide information about the Gloucester Drawbridge Replacement Project. These communication tools are for our Newburyport/Rockport Line riders and communities and include:

  • An updated website – www.MBTA.com/projects/gloucester-drawbridge-replacement – with information on construction progress and other relevant activities

  • A dedicated email address for submitting questions and concerns to the MBTA team: GloucesterDraw@MBTA.com
  • A project email system that will be used to distribute information to the community, such as construction advisories and project updates
  • A project fact sheet that will be available soon on the website

The MBTA plans to provide you with regular updates and information on the Gloucester Drawbridge Replacement Project. The website and emails will also provide a way for you to ask questions about the project. The MBTA will announce a virtual public meeting in the new year as well.

Work Underway

We want you to be aware that there are numerous activities taking place in the area of the Gloucester Drawbridge. Some are related to the bridge replacement and others to activities such as tie replacements. The MBTA chose this time to take advantage of the track shutdown to expedite maintenance work. In addition, Keolis is undertaking repairs and Positive Train Control (PTC) is being installed on the line as a Commuter Rail safety enhancement. We plan to advise you on these activities going forward.

Operations

When the Rockport Line diversion began, homeowners along the right-or-way were uncomfortable with the sound of the locomotive engines idling as they waited between service trips. The MBTA worked with elected officials to develop an alternate system that has reduced this inconvenience. The trains are now positioned far from any residences. If you are aware of any non-compliance with this policy, please be in touch with us at the email address above.

We thank everyone for their patience with the shuttle bus diversions and other changes in our Commuter Rail operations. These are temporary changes, and we are committed to making them work as efficiently as possible. We look forward to providing you updates as the project goes forward.

Please share this email with anyone you think will be interested in receiving it. If you have been forwarded this email and would like to receive email updates, please sign up here.

Best Regards,
The Gloucester Drawbridge Team
