Superintendent Michael Harvey has announced that the talents of Masconomet Regional High School students will be highlighted by Peabody Essex Museum next month.
Students explored the museum in October 2023 and were led on a tour of the fashion and textile gallery by Petra Slinkard, Curator of Fashion and Textiles. Students took photos of items that inspired them.
The visit led to two projects. In one project, students created collections of three outfits that were inspired by something they saw at the museum. Work included the creation of a presentation board that featured their designs, illustrations, flat sketches, sources of inspiration, color story, and a unique surface pattern design.
For the second project, students made a three-dimensional garment made out of unconventional materials. The garments were based on the students’ three-outfit collection and surface pattern design.
Slinkard visited Masconomet in January to share her expertise and provide students with actionable feedback on their creations. Last month the museum asked Masconomet art instructor Elizabeth Saitta to record a short video about the students’ creations for its annual fundraising gala. The invitation stated that the school’s design challenge was “a point of pride” for Slinkard and the museum.
“The challenge inspired our students to think about fashion from new and different perspectives,” Saitta said. “We cherish our ongoing relationship with Peabody Essex Museum, and are proud knowing PEM sees value in supporting a future generation of creators.”
