Manchesterbythesea Fire Department: It’s Time for Fun Fact Friday!

MANCESTERBYTHESEA = It’s the last Friday of the month, which means it’s time to showcase one of our vehicles. This month, we are highlighting Car 2 / Medic 2, a 2018 Ford Explorer Interceptor. This vehicle was previously designated as the Chief’s Car and has been repurposed for two primary functions:

  1. Transporting the OIC (Officer-in-Charge): This vehicle is used to transport our Officer-in-Charge during specific calls. Utilizing this vehicle, we minimize wear and tear on our more expensive apparatus. It is also easier to manage with just one person, especially when we are at minimum staffing and the other two on-duty firefighters are responding to other calls.
  2. Providing Paramedic Level Mutual Aid: When providing mutual aid to neighboring communities, specifically when their basic ambulance is available and only Paramedics are needed, Medic 2 allows us to keep our sole ambulance in town and available for our residents.

When the vehicle operates within the town for fire responses, it is designated as Car 2. However, when it is responding as an intercept vehicle, its designation changes to Medic 2. This reduce confusion about the vehicle’s purpose.

Car 2 / Medic 2 is equipped with a variety of tools and equipment, including:

  • Communication Equipment: iPad, radios, MDT (Mobile Data Terminal)
  • Knox Box Key
  • Combustible Gas Meter
  • Thermal Imaging Camera
  • Automobile Lockout Kit
  • Jump Start Pack
  • SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus)
  • Flashlights
  • Incident Command Board
  • Full complement of Advanced Life Support (Paramedic) Equipment

By ensuring we have the right tools on board, we are better prepared to serve our community effectively.
