Superintendent Pam Beaudoin and Principal Joanne Maino are pleased to share that several Grade 7 students reflected on their role in shaping America’s future by participating in the Patriot’s Pen National Essay Contest.

The Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest is an annual national competition open to students in grades 6-8 sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

The contest inspires students to express their values and opinions on patriotic themes. The theme for this year’s essay was “My Voice in America’s Democracy?” which encouraged students to explore the ways they can contribute to democracy.

16 Manchester Essex Regional Middle School (MERMS) students in Vidula Plante and Jan Gauthier’s English classes submitted essays to the contest.

Makayla Miller’s essay won first place at the district level, and her essay will now advance to the state round of the competition.

Essays are judged based on the applicant’s knowledge of the theme, development of the theme and clarity of ideas.

Should Miller place at the state level, her essay will advance to compete at the national level.

Other students who submitted essays are Caleb Beausoleil, Melina Binieris, Isaac Collins, Katherine Costello, Scarlett Chobanian, Madeline Eurich, Thomas Frash, Eleanor Hall, Aviva Hocherman, Myriam Langlois, Layla Mello, Declan McKeen, Ava Porter, Evelyn Rodi, and Skylar Rothe.

On Friday, Dec. 13, VFW District 10 Commander Kim Emmerling visited the participating classrooms to congratulate and celebrate students for entering the contest.

Plante, Gauthier and Principal Maino would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of each of the students who submitted an essay.

“We are unbelievably proud of each of our students who participated in this contest and took the time to create thoughtful essays that reflected their honest opinions and beliefs,” said Principal Maino. “It is important our students understand the role they have in our society as they continue to grow personally and academically, and we are grateful they had this experience to reflect on that.”

Principal Maino and Superintendent Beaudoin would like to thank Plante and Gauthier for supporting the students through the process and making their participation possible.
