The Manchester-by-the-Sea Fire Department is currently responding to a potential mercury leak at Manchester Essex Regional Middle School.
At this time, the rooms affected by the potential leak have been identified, isolated, and ventilated. The cause of the leak was determined to be a broken lightbulb.
We have determined there is no threat to staff or students.
We have notified the State Department of Fire Services Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Division, which will respond.
Please note that there will be a large police and fire presence at the school while we continue to conduct operations.
