“Malcolm brings a wealth of hockey knowledge to Salem State University, said Carl.”  He has been coaching in the area for many years and is widely known and widely respected.  We are so fortunate to have the opportunity to have a coach of Malcolm’s caliber on our staff and look forward with great anticipation to the growth and development of the women’s ice hockey program under Malcolm’s leadership.”

Spurling has over 23 years of experience coaching youth girl’s hockey, including nine seasons with the Assabet Valley Girls club program. He won seven state championships, and the 2006 U14 national title. Spurling was also an assistant coach for the Assabet Valley Girl’s U16 Red Major, which won back-to-back national championships in 2007 and 2008.

Recently, Spurling has served as the head coach at The Rivers School in Weston for the past four seasons, leading the school to four straight NEPSAC playoff appearances and a Division II championship in 2015.

“I am honored and incredibly excited about this opportunity to be named the women’s head ice hockey coach at Salem State; and I look forward toward working with these young student-athletes. I’d like to thank the Athletic Director Peggy Carl and her search committee for their time and consideration.”

Spurling, who resides in Byfield, Mass. with his wife and three children, earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Salem State. He is a member of the American Hockey Coaches Association.
