Local Athletes Lead Endicott Baseball, Men’s Lacrosse, and Women’s Lacrosse to Wins on Wednesday – Games Stories

BEVERLY – The Endicott baseball team defeated No. 23 nationally ranked Southern Maine, 10-6, on Wednesday evening in non-conference action at North Field. 

Colby Morris (Newburyport, Mass.) earned the win (1-1) in his first career start on five-plus innings pitched, three hits, three runs (one earned), two walks, and two strikeouts. Nick Quattro (Canton, Conn.) closed the door over the final four innings for the Gulls to collect his third save of the season. Quattro yielded five hits, three runs (all earned), and one walk alongside a game-high five punchouts. 

Southern Maine sophomore reliever Matt Correale (Peabody, Mass.) suffered the loss via 3 2/3 innings, four hits, four runs (two earned), zero walks, and four strikeouts. Henry Curran (South Portland, Maine), the Huskies starter, did not record an out to begin the contest. His pitching line consisted of zero hits, two runs (one earned), and three free passes. 

Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the second, Endicott broke open the tie via a throwing error and a Michael Casciano (Somers, Conn.) two-run double to left center field. The Gulls followed with two more runs in the fourth, and another four runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. 

Joseph Deutsch (Fairfield, Conn.) and Nick Berno (St. Albans, Vt.) picked up RBIs in the fourth, while Mike Kochiss (Fairfield, Conn.), Deutsch, and Matt Bald (De Pere, Wisc.) all drove in runs in the fifth. Endicott’s only other run in the fourth scored on a wild pitch. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE 

  • Ian Schmidt (Plymouth, Conn.) reached base in all four of his plate appearances (one double, two singles, and a walk), and also scored three times. Schmidt has now reached base safely in three straight games, and eight times overall this season.
  • Deutsch and Kochiss both finished with two RBIs each. It marks the first multi-RBI game of Deutsch’s career and third for Kochiss this season.
  • The Gulls are 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents this season.
  • Endicott improved its record to 3-2 at home on the year. 

FOR THE FOES 

  • Paul McDonough (Wells, Maine) brought the game within striking distance in the sixth with a three-run blast to left center field to make it a 10-5 game, at the time.
  • McDonough then cut into the deficit again in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to right field. The senior first baseman finished his day at the plate 1-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI.
  • Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine) tied up the contest for the Huskies in the second with a two-run double to deep left center field. Dexter was 1-for-4 with two RBIs in the loss.
  • Tanner Laberge (Windham, Maine) was effective out of the bullpen as the sophomore reliever tossed two hitless/scoreless frames and only allowed one walk.
  • Southern Maine is ranked No. 23 in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Poll.

Endicott (7-5) hosts MIT tomorrow in a non-conference clash at 3:30 PM. No. 23 Southern Maine (7-5) will take on MIT the following day in Gorham, Maine at 1 PM.


BIDDEFORD, Maine – Endicott senior attackman Will Jennings (Danvers, Mass.) scored six goals to lead the Gulls past the University of New England, 10-8, on Wednesday evening in a conference matchup at the Big Blue Turf. 

Jennings paced all point-getters in the contest with seven total on his six tallies and one assist. Bryan McManus (Madison, Conn.) also contributed two markers and one assist, while Kenneth Speak (Melbourne, Australia) and Colin Bannon (Westport, Conn.) rounded out the list of scores for Endicott with one goal apiece. 

In goal, Grant Thompson (South Hamilton, Mass.) collected 13 saves to move his record to 2-3 on the season. Thompson now has double-digit saves in five games this spring (season/career-high 16 vs. Amherst). 

Tied 4-4 late in the third quarter, Bannon jump-started a 4-0 run for the Gulls with his 12th tally of the season off a feed from Jennings with 15-seconds to play. Endicott carried that momentum into the fourth as Jennings buried back-to-back tallies at 14:05 and 13:04, respectively, before Speak capped the spurt with his first goal of the season at 7:55. 

UNE responded with a two-goal run of its own over the next 2:43 of play, but McManus and Jennings countered with two straight tallies at 4:12 and 3:46 to help seal the win. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE 

  • Bannon dished out a season-high three assists in the win.
  • Cam Goodrich (Raynham, Mass.) helped setup Jennings’ final strike at 3:46. It was Goodrich’s second helper of the season.
  • Endicott improved to 24-2 versus UNE in the all-time series.
  • Tommy Hughes (Coram, N.Y.) continued his dominance at the face-off X once again as the senior went 14-for-20 and collected six ground balls.
  • Shane Hughes (York Beach, Maine), Hayden Souza (West Hartford, Conn.), and Dylan Carter (Bethel, Conn.) also tied T. Hughes for the team-high in ground balls (6 each, respectively).
  • The Gulls were 17-for-21 on clears (tied season-high for most successful clears | fifth time this year with 17).
  • Endicott handed UNE its first loss at home in 2017. 

FOR THE FOES 

  • Andrew Curro (Niskayuna, N.Y.) guided the Nor’easters offensively with four goals and two assists.
  • Dan Auger (Nashua, N.H.) added two strikes, while Alex Zadworny (Florence, Mass.) and Remy Watt (Merrimack, N.H.) scored the only other goals for UNE.
  • David Pearson (Scarborough, Maine) made 14 saves in the loss (6-3).
  • Wyatt Ehrhardt (Temecula, Calif.) tied Endicott’s four student-athletes for the game-high in ground balls.

BIDDEFORD, Maine.Freshman midfielder Jennifer Lacroix‘s (Wrentham, Mass.) career-high six goals and one assist helped the Endicott women’s lacrosse team defeat University of New England, 18-11, Wednesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on a chilly night at the Big Blue Turf.

Lacroix accounted for one-third of the Gulls’ offensive output as she scored a six of Endicott’s season-high 18 goals and won a game-high/career-high 10 draw controls.

Senior attack Meghan Lennon (Canton, Mass.) struck first with 21:09 ticks left in the opening stanza to give the Gulls an early 1-0 advantage on a feed from senior midfielder Emily Whitney (Rye, N.H.).

A first half hat trick and a fourth marker from Lacroix and a pair of tallies from junior midfielder Olivia Larson‘s (Cheshire, Conn.) and Lennon again, sent Endicott into the break up, 8-0.

Trailing 10-0, UNE’s sophomore attack Nichole Carvalho (South Kingstown, R.I.) registered a man-down goal to light up the scoreboard for the Nor’easters with 23:06 remaining in the game.

Endicott led by as much as nine, up 11-2 with 22:31 remaining in the game, but UNE was able to storm back to cut the deficit to as low as four (14-10) with 4:54 left.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Sophomore goalie Bella Rino (Northborough, Mass.) made her second career start in goal (2-0) and earned her second straight win as she made six saves and allowed just one goal before giving way to senior Maura Grady (Marblehead, Mass.) with 23:06 to go in the game.
  • Grady made five saves in the relief effort.
  • Lacroix and Lennon tied for a season-high with seven points apiece tonight.
  • Lennon registered a season-high five goals to bring her total to 20, one-shy of the team lead.
  • Lacroix’s 10 draw controls is a new season-high for the Gulls so far this year.
  • Larson and sophomore attack Jackie Neilsen (Agawam, Mass.) each potted a pair of goals, while Whitney, sophomore midfielder Ali Campbell (Lakeville, Mass.) and freshman attack Meghan Dutchyshyn (Cheshire, Conn.) all buried one marker.
  • Whitney dished out a game-best three assists (personal season-high and tied team season-most), while also scooping up a game-high five ground balls and tying for a game-high two caused turnovers.
  • Lennon and Campbell each added two assists, while Lacroix notched one.
  • Endicott shut a team out for the second time in a half all year (first half against Keene State.)

FOR THE FOES

  • UNE outscored Endicott, 11-10, in the second half after being shut out in a single half all year.
  • The Nor’easters were led in scoring by sophomore midfielder Korinne Bohunsky’s (Eliot, Maine) hat trick.
  • Senior midfielder Kimberly Gosselin (Concord, N.H.), senior midfielder Jocelyn Davee (Freeport, Maine), and Carvalho each registered a pair of goals, while first-year attack Anna Stowell (Sutton, N.H.) and  senior attack Brooke Kelleher (Exeter, N.H.) rounded out the offense.
  • Defensively, Gosselin scooped up a team-high four ground balls and junior defender Jolena Lampron (Lyman, Maine) won a team-high eight draw controls.
  • Sophomore goalie Maritza Nary (Dover, N.H.) fell to 4-5 on the season as she stopped seven shots in the defeat.

NOTES

  • The Gulls are 18-5 all-time and 8-3 on the road all-time against UNE, dating back to the 2001 season.
  • Endicott has won 18 straight against the Nor’easters, including a 14-10 victory in Beverly, Mass. in the most recent meeting before today on May 4, 2016 in the CCC Semifinals.
