Salem State Men’s Basketball Wins

Fitchburg, Mass. – Fitchburg State University men’s basketball team dropped a 93-85 decision to the Vikings of Salem State University, on Wednesday evening in Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Parkinson Gymnasium.

The Basics
Score: Fitchburg State University 85, Salem State University 93
Records: Fitchburg State (7-13, 3-5 MASCAC) | Salem State (18-3, 8-0 MASCAC)

How It Happened
Fitchburg opened the contest with a jumper from sophomore Tyrell St. John (Stamford, Conn.) for a 2-0 lead. Salem State chipped the scoreboard with a trey from Alex Santos (Lawrence, Mass.). The visitors then broke the game open with a 14-4 run, with six different scorers over the five minute span. With 11:30 on the clock the Green and Gold pulled within six (19-13) following a pair of layups from Charles Doss (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Jonathan Perez (Lowell, Mass.). After FSU junior Noah Fleury (Weymouth, Mass.) made it a 25-20 game with a lay-in at 7:18, Salem responded with a 13-4 spark to push away to a 14 point lead. Salem held their largest lead of the half (15) with 1:37 to go following a 3-point shot from Jacob Lindland (Hamilton, Mass.), but the Falcons finished with a jumper from senior Joshua Bosworth (Springfield, Mass.) to put the score at 48-35.

Senior Drew Healy (Lowell, Mass.) opened the second half with a 2-point marker for Salem State, as the Vikings quickly regained control, holding a 21 point lead (70-49) with 14:24 to play. However, the Falcons wouldn’t quit, and dug in with some nasty defense and clutch baskets from the offense. Tallying seven points from Nicholas Tracy (Indianapolis, IN), eight points from Perez and when junior Brandon Harris (San Bernardino, Calif.) converted a bunny with 6:27 to play the difference was now three points (79-76). Unfortunately, that was as close as the home team could get and the Vikings held on down the stretch for the 93-85 victory.

Salem State Women’s Basketball Wins

Fitchburg, Mass. — Senior Norma Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) netted 14 points, including her 1,000th career point and Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass.) contributed a team-high 15 points and 13 rebounds as Salem State topped Fitchburg State 77-65 in Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Parkinson Gymnasium.

Waggett, who played her first two seasons at St. Joseph’s (Maine), is the first Vikings’s player to reach the 1,000 point plateau since Rachael Carter in 2014.

Salem State (8-13, 4-4 MASCAC) opened the game with a quick 5-2 lead on baskets from Gianna Moschella (Peabody, Mass.) and Waggett, but the Falcons would respond with a 17-6 run to close out the first quarter with a 19-11 lead. Sophomore Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, NH) led the scoring spree with 9 points, while senior Mercy Frimpong (Worcester, Mass.) closed out the frame with an uncontested layup for the hosts’ eight point advantage.

The teams traded baskets for the first half of the second stanza and the Falcons would take their largest lead of the game when freshman Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass.)hit the front end of two free-throws. Trailing by eight (36-28) with 1:58 on the clock, Salem outscore Fitchburg State 6-0 including a trey from sophomore Christina Corey (Methuen, Mass.) as time expired to only trail by two (36-34) heading into intermission.

Salem continued the streak to start the second half with ten unanswered points to lead 44-36 at the 7:36 mark. With 5:12 remaining the Green and Gold had cut the deficit to 46-44 with a pair of 3-point scores from Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.) and Mikala Malboeuf (Fitchburg, Mass.) and a layup in the paint from Mitchell. It was as close as the Falcons could get as the Vikings finished the quarter with a 57-50 lead.

Trailing 72-59 midway through the last stanza, Fitchburg State (5-15, 0-8 MASCAC) would get four straight points on baskets from Michaela McTomney (Bellingham, Mass.) and Frimpong to get the shortfall under ten points, however Salem would pull away down the stretch for the 77-65 final.

FSU guard Marazzi led all scores with 16 points, added six assists and collected seven rebounds. McTomney had a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with six points for the Falcons.

Salem State has won the five of the last six contest against Fitchburg State, including a 69-45 decision (1/10/2018) at Twohig Gymnasium earlier this season.
