NEC Boys Tennis: Marblehead 5, Swampscott 0

In a match that was closer than the score, Marblehead Boys Tennis beat Swampscott 5-0 at Marblehead HS. The sub-varsity matches were also a sweep 3-0 for MHS.

It was a beautiful afternoon at MHS, warm weather and relatively little wind for our season opener against a perennial rival.

  1. Senior quad captain Justin Faia dropped the first set against Swampscott’s Sam Mayblyum in a tie-breaker 6-7 (5-7) but came back to win the second set 6-3. The entire match was already decided so a 10-point super tie-breaker was played which Justin won 10-7. This was an excellent match by both players with good sportsmanship and long points.
  2. Senior quad-captain Felix Litvak beat Will Talebian 6-2, 6-0 with penetrating ground strokes and consistent play.
  3. Sophomore Billy Ackerman beat Justin Ratner 6-1, 6-3. Billy used his forceful ground strokes to set up easy put away volleys at the net.

1st doubles: Senior quad-captains Sam Orenstein and Garrett Tully beat Owen Madigan-Fried and Steve Santanello 6-3, 6-0. I’m looking forward to more great doubles play from this seasoned team who played together last year as well.

2nd doubles: Sophomores Dan Litvak and Jack Quigley beat Ben Ringler and Dan Johnson 6-2, 6-1. Dan served well and Jack had some excellent put-aways at the net.

In sub-varsity play, seniors Mike Conlin and Luke Fobert won 6-1. Sophomores Adam Sherf and Tony Gluskin won 7-6 (7-3) and Juniors Mason Friedman and Harry Dolin won 6-1.

Ipswich played a strong unified game.  Every player got into the game today and the unity on the field remained strong throughout.  Meghan O’Connor and Julia Glavin did an excellent job of leading the draw control.  Caitlyn Stevens made smart offensive cuts leading to 3 goals in the game.  Kesley Daly and Izzy Primack had great ground ball control and interceptions.  And all players did well pressuring the ball and swarming in the midfield to create turnovers for our team and both goalies made key saves –  Emily had a shutout with her time in goal.

Ipswich came out with intensity and gave a perfect effort from the start of the game and to its finish.  The conditions were difficult with driving rain, wind and cold temperatures but we had a goal in mind and that was to beat North Andover.  After all, no one can remember back that far to the year when we may have defeated them.  It has been at least 7+ years.   We were ready for them this year and we did it on our brand new home turf field.  Julia Glavin led the offensive end with 7 goals which she carefully maneuvered around N Andovers zone defense.  Chloe Rogers and Kelsey Daly used their speed to control many of the loose ball pickups and transitioned that ball cleanly up the field.  Annie Gillis is a new starting freshman who is a key player to watch for this season – she used her speed in transitions and off the draw and placed 3 smart shots in the back of the net.  And Emily Martineau had an amazing game in goal making 15 saves and cleared the ball with excellent calm and control.
