GLOUCESTER – St. Bernard’s Central Catholic (1-1) visited Gloucester (2-0) Friday at 7 p.m. The Bernardians (from Fitchburg) beat Blackstone Regional, 22-13 in the season opener and lost in overtime last week to Northbridge, 22-20.
Meanwhile, the Fishermen had outscored their first two opponents 59-16 and travel to Salem for a 6:30 kickoff next Friday.
The first score of the game came with 5:58 to play in the first half when St Bernard’s Quinn Carlson hauled in a 23 yard pass from QB Salvi Bilotta that finished off a 7 play, 62 yard drive. After the 2 point conversion attempt failed, the score remained 6-0 until the clock showed 4:20 left in the game. Hayden Souza ripped off a 51 yard run with a dive off left tackle that tied the game. Cam Widfeldt kicked the PAT, the Fishermen had a 7-6 lead they held the rest of the way.
Gloucester held St. Bernard’s to 45 total yards from scrimmage in the second half. Overall, St. Bernard’s totaled 184 yards to Gloucester’s 142, 100 of which were amassed in the 2nd half.
