Hamilton-Wenham High School Has New Varsity Football Head Coach

From Hamilton-Wenham High School Director of Athletics Craig Genualdo:

Tim Freiermuth named football coach at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School

Tim Freiermuth has been named varsity football coach at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High
School, according to Athletic Director Craig Genualdo.

Freiermuth, who was as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Pentucket, takes over for Jim
Pugh, who retired after six seasons at Hamilton-Wenham.

“We had some very qualified, capable applicants,” Genualdo said. “But, ultimately, Tim stood
out. His experience at quality programs, his connections to college programs, and his
understanding of what football means in a high school setting and to the communities of the
Cape Ann League set him apart.”

Freiermuth, who was introduced to the Hamilton-Wenham players Monday afternoon, was
chosen from a pool of 14 applicants, five of whom were interviewed by a committee
representing a cross section of constituencies from the community.

“I’m thrilled and excited for this opportunity,” said Freiermuth. “Playing against Hamilton-
Wenham was always a battle. They’re hard-working kids. That’s what drew me to this
opportunity.”

He said he would stress three main values with this team: effort, attitude and trust.
“Effort in the weight room, classroom and in other sports,” he said. “Having a positive attitude.
And trust in your coaches, teammates and teachers.”

At Pentucket, Freiermuth coached offensive line, receivers, outside linebackers and defensive
backs over the last two seasons. Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach at Bentley
University, Geneva College and Bates College.

Freiermuth played center at Pentucket and Springfield College, where he earned a bachelor’s
degree in 2017. He holds a master’s degree from Geneva College.

“I love the rivalries in the Cape Ann League and how much people here care about their sports,”
said Freiermuth, whose younger brother, Pat, is coming off a spectacular rookie season as a
tight end with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Freiermuth, a certified strength and conditioning coach, is a health teacher at Pentucket. He
said the prospect of replacing Pugh, who was also head coach at Masconomet for 26 years, is
daunting, yet exciting.

“It’s an honor to take over from someone like Jim Pugh with the tremendous coaching career
he had and his influence in Massachusetts high school football,” he said. “The goal is to keep
the tradition of Generals football alive and what that represents and bring in what I believe in.”
