Governor Healey Responds to Latest Assault on Reproductive Rights by President Trump, Secretary Kennedy

BOSTON – Governor Maura Healey is today responding to the latest assault on women’s reproductive rights by President Donald Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Today, the Massachusetts Division of Insurance received a notice from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights notifying them that the agency is undertaking a compliance review of Massachusetts’ mandate that health insurance plans cover abortion care.
“This is the latest effort by President Trump and Secretary Kennedy to take away women’s reproductive rights,” said Governor Healey. “In Massachusetts, we’re focused on making sure everyone can access and afford the health care services they need, including abortion care. We’re not going to be intimidated by this investigation, and we are going to continue protecting women’s access to reproductive health care.”
This requirement was passed as part of Massachusetts’ Shield Law, which is the strongest in the nation and protects patients and providers following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The insurance provision is intended to ensure that every woman can afford the essential reproductive health care they need.
