Moulton Announcement – Gloucester one of 27 Cities Nationwide to Receive White House Local Foods, Local Places Initiative Grant

Moulton: This Initiative Will Help Gloucester Develop a Strategy and Action Plan
To Expand Economic Opportunities in the Fishing Industry

SALEM – The White House selected the City of Gloucester as one of 27 communities across the nation to participate in the Local Foods, Local Places Initiative. Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA) praised the selection of Gloucester as part of the economic development program. After reviewing nearly 350 municipal applicants, the White House Rural Council in partnership with six federal agencies chose Gloucester as one of 27 communities nationwide. Moulton sent a letter to the White House Rural Council this fall in support of Gloucester’s application. Gloucester is the only city in the Northeast that was selected to participate in the initiative.

“This program helps communities around the country create walkable, healthy, economically vibrant neighborhoods through the development of local food systems,” said Moulton. “This award will help the community of Gloucester develop a strategy and action plan to expand economic opportunities in the fishing industry and use local seafood to support healthy living.”
The selected cities will receive expert advice and support for local food projects aimed at boosting local economic development. A team of experts will be sent to Gloucester to assist in developing projects around access to healthy, local food.

Gloucester Mayor Sefatia Romeo-Theken said of the announcement, “Local Foods Local Places is a perfect example of a collaborative effort between the city of Gloucester and the federal government. Since taking office, Congressman Moulton has been a great advocate for the city of Gloucester and we appreciate his support.”
