Gloucester Fire Department Invites Community to Attend Memorial Service on Sunday

GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith and the Gloucester Fire Department invite residents to attend the annual Gloucester Firefighter Relief Association Memorial Service on Sunday, June 8.

The event begins at 8:45 a.m. from the Department of Public Works yard on Poplar Street, with a march to Cherry Hill Cemetery on March Street (by Addison Gilbert Hospital). A ceremony at the Memorial will follow. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held at the Fire Department Headquarters on School Street.

The Memorial is inscribed with “The Firefighter’s Prayer” and honors eight Gloucester firefighters who died in the line of duty: William W. Coull, Alexander J. Guittarr, Elmer A. Hurlburt, John A. McCauley, Moses Rust Jr., Russell M. Shea, Guy B. Symonds, and Joseph T. Zager.

The ceremony will honor those men as well as Gloucester firefighters who have passed away in the last year.
